How online poker tournaments work

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

Poker tournaments have been around for a long time, and are a great way for serious poker players to hone their skills. Many casinos around the world host tournaments where top players compete against each other for a substantial amount of money. Gambling havens like Las Vegas host several world class tournaments every year.

Recently, online casinos have joined this popular trend by hosting their own poker tournaments as well. These tournaments are similar to land based casinos, with players pitting themselves against each other for the top prize. The difference, however, are those online poker tournaments typically having fewer restrictions, which often make them more appealing to your average poker player.

How do online poker tournaments work?

Online casinos are similar to traditional brick and mortar casinos and follow the same poker rules. Do your research and find various websites that host popular games like Texas Hold’em Poker.

Online casinos usually run their poker tournaments on a first come first serve basis. You can sign up for each tournament at the respective websites. During the tournament, standard tournament poker rules apply. However, during an online tournament, poker playing etiquette may be more lax as you are not literally next to your opponent. But don’t let this fool you; most players carry the same level of professionalism as they would in a major, traditional tournament. Do yourself a favour and follow traditional poker rules when playing in a tournament.

There are three major advantages to online tournaments. Firstly, online poker tournaments give the player the option to play against almost anyone in the world. This is great for serious poker players wanting to show off their skills.  Secondly, online tournaments are easier to compete in. And thirdly, online tournaments offer players more options. If you have a favourite game that is not hosted by a particular casino, you can easily look around online for a website that does.

What kinds of poker tournaments are available at online casinos?

Online casinos have several tournaments running throughout the year. Some online casinos even offer weekly, monthly and even daily tournaments. Do your research to find one that suits you.

Bounty Tournaments are one of the most popular online tournaments to participate in. In Bounty Tournaments the goal is to eliminate other players and get their bounty. For every player that you eliminate from the tournament, you collect a bounty on that player. The last player to be eliminated collects the final prize.

Another tournament is the Shootout Tournaments. This type of tournament is for truly competitive poker players and works similar to Bounty Tournaments. The goal is to eliminate players, but players are eliminated quicker at single hand tables.

What are the downsides to online poker tournaments?

The biggest downside is probably the risk involved. It can be difficult to determine which online casinos are legitimate or not as they are not as established as their land based counterparts. Some online casinos have a payment policy that is difficult to understand, which could lead to confusion and the player taking home less than expected.

Not every online casino is a scam and there are many legitimate places to play poker online. Research your chosen online casino thoroughly before joining a tournament or even playing casually on the site.

What are the most popular casino games?

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

If you are new to online gambling, you are probably wondering where to start. What are the best online casino games, and what is everyone playing? This question is quite a tricky one, because the best casino games are obviously subjective as everyone’s taste differs. When it comes to online casino games, there are a few games that seem to rule the roost. Here we offer some insight on the most popular casino games.

Slots

Commonly referred to as the ‘one-armed bandit’, slots are very popular both online and offline. And while blackjack tables attract the more experience players, slots are great for those trying their luck out for the first time.

One reason for the popularity of online slots is that it is based entirely on chance, so you can never be too good, or too bad. There is no particular skill needed, therefore novice players are frequently attracted to these online casino games. Another reason for its popularity is that this game is non-threatening – you are playing by yourself with no outside pressure or judgment on you when losing.

Another attraction, which could be the main one, is the adrenaline rush you get from playing the game – which results in the casino game being highly addictive. The opportunity to win big is always present; all you need is a healthy dose of good luck. This is one reason that the best online slots are considered one of the best casino games, whether online or offline.

Card games

Traditional card games like poker and blackjack are among the most popular casino games. When playing online, some sites allow you to download practice games where you can learn the tricks without actually betting money. This is ideal for sharpening your skills before playing for real money.

Other top casino games

Video poker – Like blackjack, video poker allows the skilled player to have an edge over the house. This, however, is not relevant to land based casino games where bluffing will not work as well.

Other popular casino games include roulette, baccarat and keno. Even virtual bingo parlors are also springing up all over the net. These casino games are available online at various websites. Online gambling is a great way to learn the skill of these popular casino games before applying them in real life. Visit a reputable online gambling website and starting learning the art of casino games.

List of poker hands

August 25, 2010 by Mary Smith

Ever wonder what beats what in poker? Here we cover the ranking of poker hands.

Royal Flush

A Royal Flush is the highest and rarest ranking hand when playing poker online. It consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten – all in the same suit. The type of suit does not matter in a Royal Flush.

Straight Flush

This is five cards of the same suit in consecutive sequence. Like with a Royal Flush, the type of suit makes no difference. In a straight flush, while an Ace can be used as the highest and lowest card, a hand cannot be formed with the Ace not starting or finishing the sequence.

Four of a Kind

A Four of a Kind rank is just that – any 4 of the same cards in one hand. Keep in mind that four of a kind does not fulfill the requirements of a five-card hand. Therefore, if two or more players both have a four of a kind hand, the fifth card, or kicker, would determine who wins. The higher the kicker, the stronger the hand.

Full House

Full House is one of the best hands you can get. This consists of a pair – two cards of the same value, along with a three of a kind. The strength of the full house is based on the dominating set.

Flush

The flush, while still rare, is still considered one of the highest ranking hands. A flush is five of any cards of the same suit. Because all suits have equal value, the strength of the suit is based on the highest card in the hand. If the highest card of the suit is equal, then the second highest card wins. If both/all players have the exact same hand and strength of suit, then the pot is drawn.

Straight

A straight hand is five cards of mixed suit in sequential order. The player with the highest straight wins the pot. Remember, like with a straight flush, an Ace must start or end the sequence of numbers.

Three of a Kind

Three of a Kind is when a player has 3 cards of the same value. In poker, this hand is commonly referred to as a ‘set’.

Two Pair

This happens when 2 different pairs of cards appear in the same hand.

Pair

This is one of the most common hands when you play poker online. This is a hand which includes 2 of the same value of card, irrelevant of the other cards in the hand or suit. If two players have a pair, the highest pair wins.

High Card

When a player has none of the abovementioned hands, the winner will be the player with the highest card, making the best 5 card hand.
