Online poker games present opportunities never thought of before

September 29, 2010 by Mary Smith

The dawn of the internet has created many industries that our grandparents’ parents wouldn’t recognise, at least not in the guises these industries exist in at present. One of the many alternatives that we have access to is that of online poker games. This industry exists to entertain us in some way or another: we read about who won the world’s largest pot or we read thoughtleader articles on why women’s presence in poker needs attention. South Africans and online poker

September 28, 2010 by Mary Smith

A great majority of South Africans have loved gambling since the first time they were introduced to it. More specifically, they’ve always loved playing poker and other types of games that require a combination of perseverance, charm and skill. There have been, however, many struggles in the years since South Africans became card-carrying members of the digital revolution.

Some circles still revile online poker, for whatever reason that may be. ‘Regular’ gambling pours R6 billion into the tax coffers of the government every year. There is reason to think that online poker, if it becomes legal, could also add a substantial sum of money to this economy.

The South African Poker Association has existed since 2004 and they have given the online poker industry in SA a great deal of clout: the organisation abides to rules that bind all poker organisations throughout the world. This ensures responsible gaming because organisations that can boast the SAPA stamp of approval has proved their worth – they need to pass certain tests to ensure that they will uphold the good name of the parent organisation.

They are but one organisation that is working to better the perception of online poker among South Africans. This is good news for all on the continent because there is so much potential: income creation, revenue, skills creation, and many more.

This is good news to people such as Raymond Rahme, who have been excelling at ‘regular’ poker on an international level for a number of years. He and other people find a certain amount of joy and satisfaction in playing online poker at whichever their favourite site may be.  They often start out playing poker as a pastime and this eventually progresses to a more full-time occupation, whether they make a living out of it or not.

Bluffing in online poker

September 27, 2010 by Mary Smith

Westerns without at least one poker scene just do not get commissioned. Such a movie would lack vitality and no director would want to create something that lacks punch. There is a reason why this is the way it is: poker allows us to once again become children. We feel awe at someone who can blend high art and a little bit of drama. This magic elixir that does just that is something that goes by the name of bluffing. [Read more…] about Bluffing in online poker

What is your poker games style?

August 26, 2010 by Mary Smith

While it is true that most poker games are very easy to learn to play, there are always ways and means that players can use to improve on their game. This means that the player needs to spend a substantial amount of time and effort on these efforts. They could do this through a number of means: reading books on the subject, attending courses if they exist, and learning from other players who may be more experienced than they are.

But it’s possible that the biggest part of this would include finding the player’s own unique playing style. This is simple: success in poker games partly depend on the player’s style of play. Another important factor is which cards the player has in their hands, but this is not as important as the above factor.

There are two sides to this. The first is that players who are serious about their game would know what their preferred playing style is. This means that they know whether they play tight or loose and they know whether they play aggressively or passively. This matters a great deal in the world of poker: it can make the difference between breaking the bank or begging outside the casino for a lift home.

The ‘best’ style of poker is the ‘tight-aggressive’ one. This means that the player doesn’t play every hand they get; instead, they only play a few hands that they deem to be worthy enough, ie, they know these hands are good quality hands that are likely to win. Aggressive refers to the number of bets the player makes. Aggressive players make frequent bets and tend to dominate poker games.

The flipside to a ‘tight-aggressive’ playing style is the ‘loose-passive’. This player also goes by the name of a ‘calling station’, that is, they seldom bet; instead, they call other players’ bets.

The general consensus among poker players is that players who swear by the ‘tight-aggressive’ strategy are often the ones who fare better in the game. However, players who prefer the ‘loose-aggressive’ style can also make a killing when they play a game of poker. However, it should be noted that this particular style is best left to players who know what they are doing. Newbies may fare better with the ‘tight-aggressive’ style until they figure out how best to transfer to other styles.

The second part is that players should know what their opponents’ preferred style is. This is one of the best ways that they will be able to beat their opponents and take home the jackpot.
