How to become an expert online poker player

August 25, 2010 by Mary Smith

There are many different reasons why online poker has become such a tremendous industry. Much of these reasons seem to focus on the potential to win large amounts of money and other articles, writers and pundits agree that online poker offers something for many different individuals with many different viewpoints and tastes.

But the one piece of advice that many aspirant poker players should hear is the following, which is couched as a question: do you enjoy playing poker more than anything else on earth?

This question is the one that needs answering before any poker player attempts to enter the poker hall of fame alone or with one of their most esteemed poker buddies.

There are many things to enjoy about playing poker online. One of the most obvious aspects to this is that there are other people behind the online personas. These people can offer helpful tips, support and sometimes they offer sarcasm-laden pearls of wisdom. It’s true that this can become akin to an online support forum at times, though everyone’s trying to win some money.

Another great feature of online poker rooms is that some of the players there are from different parts of the world. This is a tremendous plus for someone who is interested in learning about other areas of the world, but who does not have the funds, inclination or the ability to travel.

The tremendous variety of online poker sites and games add to the thrill that exists around this popular pastime. This makes it easy to spend most of your time online, playing poker. There is, of course, no minimum time investment required before one can be a good poker player. However, it does make sense to spend as much time as possible perfecting one’s poker skills. And that is why it is so important to enjoy spending time online. Someone who is internet-shy may very well not enjoy spending time in front of a computer. Such a person may prefer to play face-to-face games instead of on the internet, no matter what other benefits there may exist to this particular mode of playing.

Common online poker mistakes you should not make

August 25, 2010 by Mary Smith

Are you new to online poker and need some tips on the game? Here we offer some pointers on what not to do while playing poker online.

Play too many hands

Unless you have serious cash to throw away, do not play too many hands in online poker. Learn how to determine the good hands from the bad ones, and fold when necessary.

Play too quickly

Online poker is fast, but do not play so fast that you do not think about your move or strategise properly. If you need time to think, take it. You will have more than enough time to make an informed decision.

Get distracted

When you play online poker, the action is on screen. If you find yourself getting bored and distracted – like by checking your email – just grin and bear it. Some of your competitors may take long to make their next move, but try not to get distracted by the things around you. If you lose track of the game, you may lose your turn, and even money in the process.

Forget to record what is happening

You need to keep those notes to help you learn and the remember that tricks of the game. You need to keep track of what the other players are doing.

Pay too much attention on your own cards and not enough attention to what other players are doing

In online poker it’s easy to forget that there are other things to focus on, not just the hand in front of you. But when it comes to poker, both online and off, you need to be aware of what the other players are doing and how they are playing. The only way you can do this in online poker is to read and know how to deal with other players.

Stay at the same table when you are losing

If you are on a losing streak at a particular table it may not be your fault – maybe the other players at the table are just too advanced for you. In online poker there are always many tables available, so don’t stick to one particular table if you have been losing too much. Move to another one and your luck may improve.

Play too high or too low of a limit

If the limit is too high, you may be playing out of your league. If the limit’s too low, you might start playing carelessly. When you play poker online your limit choices are endless. Try your hand at different limits, record your observations and then find a middle ground.

Play no-limit games the same as limit games

These games are not the same, so you shouldn’t play it the same. There’s a whole different dynamic between no-limit and limit games. If you not used to one, take your time and ease into the game, or simply stay away until you got it right.

Play the same online as offline

Online poker is different from your regular ‘real world’ poker. In online poker it is harder to stay focussed, and you have to play faster and concentrate more. All of these can be difficult in the beginning, but it will get easier over time.

The different types and styles of poker chips

August 24, 2010 by Mary Smith

Poker chips, also known as checks or cheques, are generally found in casinos. They are casino tokens that players use in lieu of actual money or currency. Players also use poker chips to represent play money when they take part in casual games.

Poker chips originated as pure clay chips but these original chips were not of a high quality: they broke easily. These chips were the forerunners to the chips we know today – chips that are mostly composed of synthetic materials, though some companies still manufacture chips from pure clay.

Casino chips

These chips are some of the best quality that players will find anywhere: they generally consist of synthetic material and the composition makes it difficult to counterfeit the chips. Casino chips imitate the look and feel of all clay chips but with far better security features, which are very attractive to poker players and casinos.

Composite metal core chips

This type of chip is heavy but durable and can also handle extra security features. These chips are heavier than all other poker chips – it’s the metal core that’s responsible for the extra weight. The chips do last a long time but try to find chips from Taiwan instead of the ones from China. Occasional players may enjoy using these chips; however, they are not casino grade chips.

All clay chips

Poker players who know enough about poker generally prefer clay chips – these chips can last a lifetime in the hands of someone who knows how to take good care of them. Their sound is distinct and they’re also much easier to handle: they’re rougher and generally feel nicer to hold in one’s hand. The only disadvantage to these chips is that they do break down after prolonged use.

Plastic chips

Plastic chips tend not to show up in reputable casinos; their natural habitat is in a player’s home, far away from the glitz of casinos. It is for a reason: plastic chips are not as high in quality as other chips. The one advantage to these chips, however, is that they are cheap and easy to find in nearly all parts of the world.
