The Life of James Baldwin

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Born in Harlem, New York in 1924, James Baldwin rose from the scrap heaps of poverty to literary prominence through diligence in his chosen profession. He was born an illegitimate child to a mother who was employed as a menial domestic worker and a brutal foster father who subjected him to massive abuse. Clearly, the early life of this prolific one, notwithstanding this, he cultivated a strong reading habit that served as the breeding ground for his eventual eminence as a celebrated writer.
As a teenager, he got converted to the Christian faith and eventually becoming the official preacher of a small local Pentecostal church. During this period of his life, the Youngman had a dual exposure to the horrors of life blindfolded under the guise of religious emancipation. Situations lead him into a long wondrous journey that took him into places in mainland Europe such as France and Switzerland. Along these journeys, his understanding of the root causes of the existent racially inspired social order that prevailed in America owe its origin to a place. In Europe James Baldwin was discontented with the apparent feeling of loneliness and being alien. Appalled by these events his resolve to wrestle down the system became crystallized, hence his resolve to return to America from Europe to join in the ongoing civil rights struggle. His most significant contribution was the active role he played in advocating against the desegregation policy in Southern schools.

The Works of James Baldwin
It is evident from the foregoing that the voracious reading habit of young James Baldwin did play a significant role in developing his literary skills. For instance at an early teenage life, his skills were sprouting as his writings begun to receive publishing attention. His major debut was published in a local church journal. It should be stated that, James Baldwin did not have it all rosy in his quest to become a writing guru. It is on record that, he encountered a series of frustrations from publishers who declined to accept his work on grounds that are as flimsy as the policy that influenced the social order. In similar situations the growing writer became the target of a series of tongue lashing press campaigns. Some of the reviews written about his work in papers like the New York Times were not particularly pleasant. These however never dampened his resolve and enthusiasm.
Of all his writings the ace James Baldwin is particularly reputed for authoring the fictional novel “Go tell it on the mountain.” A novel that is written in a semi-autobiographical fashion bringing to the fore the saga of secret sins, guilt and religious hostility in an atmosphere characterized by gross level of social injustice.

What is an American?

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

For citizens of other nations, the creation and embracing of a national identity is fairly simple. Frenchmen speak French, appreciate fine wine and have a penchant for quoting “vive la France.” For those of German decent, a near-worship of autobahns and machines as well as beer, pretzels and bratwurst are traits that make one identify with being a German. For both these cultures, speaking the official language, French or German respectively, further add to one’s sense of identity and patriotism to one’s country. However in America, a melting pot of cultures, pinpointing precisely the characteristics that create the American identity can be more difficult and challenging a task. Indeed, the feeling of being an American varies from person to person—from the ancestors of the Founding Fathers to immigrants to refugees. Whether one is born in America and speaks fluent English or is an immigrant escaping religious persecution who never properly learns the language, both will feel American at a certain point in their lives begging the question of what exactly creates the American identity.
Hector St. Jean de Crevecoueur, in his essay ‘”What is an American” attempts to answer this question. He proposes that the binding thread that pulls all Americans, despite race, background, or religion together is the pursuit of the American Dream. Crevecoueur proposes that all peoples bring into America their own ideals, language, culture and nationality but all share the same expectation—it is this same hope and goal that blur the lines of race and language, history and culture to create something that all Americans can identify with. Crevecoueur offers the idea that whether born on American soil or immigrants from far away countries; people hold an idealized perception of America—of what she is and what she has to offer. This idealized hope (i.e. the American Dream) is internalized, driving the individual to pursue their hope and in turn, creating a place where ideas such as happiness, liberty and justice thrive. Subsequently those who come after view this fantastic utopia or equal opportunity, internalize their own American Dream, and pass it on to another generation. According to Crevecoueur, it is the embodying and cultivating of the hope and idea of the American Dream that forms the basis for the American identity.
Americans come from many backgrounds and cultures. Many have escaped religious persecution or seek political asylum. Many have immigrated from afar with the hope of having better opportunities and the chance to turn one’s dreams into a reality. Still others have a long history of American ancestors who have fought and perhaps died for the freedom and justices enjoyed in this nation and so feel obligated to love what has been fought for in the past. There exists a language barrier for many immigrants which sometimes is never truly overcome.

Promotional marketing campaign for Burger World

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Central to the success prospects of every business entity lies in its ability to be able to come out with a strategic policy that can create an accessible bridge between the said business organization and its clients. The process of developing such a policy entails an enormous amount of significant pre-planning running into the main planning process to be eventually translated into all segments of the implementation.
It is in the light of this that Burger World in its ambitious quest to becoming and remaining competitive in the food supply industry is zealously exploring the way forward in capturing a significant percentage share of the market. At present, Burger World occupies a modest ten percentage points in the market ranking. The potential for growth are enormous, it is therefore against this background that, this paper will highlight the main sections of the promotional campaign strategy of Burger World, as part of its five strategic plan.

The Strategy
The strategy begins on the premise of identifying the business environment under which Burger World is presently operating alongside what the trends are today, in order to forecast what the future outlook appears for the industry. It should be noted that the main product offered by Burger World consists of all the various fast food take-away dishes. A survey to geared at establishing a customer profiling indicated that the bulk of customers who patronize the services of Burger World within the last few months include professionals (especially working parents), unmarried individuals and miscellaneous group of others.
An important marketing strategy as described by Jess (2008) is to immediately recognize the type of customers and their relative frequencies in order to be able to come out with a comprehensive catalogue of the custom group to place on high target. In this sense therefore, the most obvious group to consider placing premium on are those within the professional domain. The wisdom behind this choice lies in the apparent scarcity of time available to this group of people. They are therefore more inclined to demand the services of fast foods than any other group.
The next most important element to be incorporated into the promotional strategy is based on how to make the services of Burger World more appealing and distinctive. It should not be forgotten that there are other equally forceful players in the industry, to be successful therefore requires the use of deliberate strategies that will make our products unseat our competitors from their long position of dominance.
In the first phase, the use of discounts to elicit customer attention will be vigorously pursued. This is based on the understanding that in order to attract the attention of customers, there should be a motivating reason to do so (Lake 2008).

By night in Chile

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Bolano Robert artistically gives a narrative account of the regime brutalities and excesses that was meted out to the Chilean people during General Augusto Pinochet’s reign, through his book entitled By Night in Chile. It is a thriller that takes the reader through a journey into the internal structures that construed the ugly stench of an unpopular regime that relied on the services of common and elitist goons to crush any resemblance of opposition. The writer does not mince words in poignantly exposing the level of melancholy instigated by the prevalent culture of intolerance and brutality.
To avoid leading his readers into a hasty fallacy of false conclusion, he gives readers a formal orientation into the complexities of the Chilean sticky political terrain predating the putsch that eventually saw the assassination of President Allende Salvador. Reading through the book, the writer does not state in clear terms if the regime excesses was an inevitable process or not. On the contrary what is abundantly evident is that he allows his readers to connect the pieces in this brain teasing novel.
Father Sebastian Urrutia Lacroix, a conservative Roman Catholic priest is portrayed as the contemporary villain in the discourse. His actions and inactions generated in different interphases throughout the novel is the premise upon which the theme of this essay is built; a strife to distant himself from a clear guilt by association reinforced by an attitude of indifference to the existent realities of his times. We read of Father Sebastian, a character who does not only represent himself but also a complex network of formidable social institutions among them included the Christian fraternity and the elitist writers’ institute of Chile (Proyect 2004). A once upon a time boisterous Father Sebastian Urruta is now struggling to disentangle himself from the grips of a pricking conscience that is justifiably scared of posterity. Ironically, Father Urruta, notwithstanding the emotional torment is still seeking to establish a reconciliatory point between his known posture of being in bed with the Pinochet regime as a symbol of his socio-political sterility (Ben 2005).
Incidentally this stance ushers in the discourse in an unhampered fashion. Employing the style of recollective narration the villain tells his story on the one hand as a man who has nothing to hide because of a purported clean record, meanwhile unknown to him; this approach makes it easy to infer that though a priest by vocation, his priorities lay elsewhere. It may be too premature to quarrel him at this early stage, judging from the fact that his aspiration to seek admission into the prestigious Chilean elite writers’ brigade may be well intentioned.

Why Pet Insurance Is A Good Idea

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

In most countries around the world, pets are usually considered to be members of the family. This is why buying pet insurance for them has become quite popular in some regions. These policies are generally used for most domestic pets such as dogs, cats, and birds, etc. There are many companies who offer this type of insurance and there are various coverage plans available to pet owners.

Some firms will offer to insure pets no matter what their age is or what type of breed they are. Most of them offer accident and illness coverage for as long as the pet lives. Pet insurance will allow owners to customize the coverage to fit their pet’s needs as well as the person’s budget. The policies generally cover a specified percentage of veterinary treatment and care.

Some policies may also include coverage for dental, behavioural treatment, therapy, and medical devices, etc. Some of them even take care of things such as kennel fees, and lost pet advertising costs. The type of coverage you take will reflect in the price. As with all types of insurance, the more coverage you have the more it will cost.

Pet insurance is a good investment for just about all pet owners ad animals are subject to just as many illnesses and accidents as humans are. A healthy pet can suddenly become sick overnight and may then need costly veterinary care to nurse it back to health.

Because pet insurance is relatively new, it’s a good idea to make sure you know exactly how the coverage works to protect your pet. You should ask as many questions as needed until you’re perfectly clear on what the policy does and doesn’t cover. This means you need to read all of the fine print that’s included in the contract.

If you’re interested in insuring your pets it’s generally considered to be a good idea to buy the coverage shortly after the animal’s born or after you acquire it. This means the pet is healthy and should have no pre-existing conditions. You will now have the peace of mind that the pet is insured for the rest of its life.

There are a lot of sites on the internet that deal in this type of coverage and there are many more that have information and articles about it. This is a good way to do some research and learn exactly how the insurance works. You may also be interested in reading some reviews and testimonials on the companies you might be interested in dealing with.

Most pet insurance websites will have full descriptions of the types of policies they offer and what they include. This will allow you to compare coverage and prices from several providers. Many of the websites will also allow you to submit information about the pet to receive a free online quote. Buying coverage for pets is becoming more popular everyday and it seems that more and more animal lovers can see the advantages to buying coverage for their furry friends.
