Waterproofing Basements

December 30, 2011 by James Lewis

Waterproofing basements is becoming more popular . This is especially the case large cities where the cost of housing is still relatively high. An unused basement can add up to 50% more living space to a home. Once waterproofed a basement provides a living space that is easy to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Waterproofing basements is not a cheap option, but it is often far cheaper than moving or having an extension built. It is also a lot less hassle for the homeowner.

Options for Waterproofing Basements
There are several reasons why a basement may not be waterproof. Water can be getting in through the floor. In this situation internal drainage may be installed or drainage into an external sump may be needed. This solution works well and can last for decades.

Occasionally water is leaking in through the walls. In these situations additional external drainage may be needed to divert water away from the basement walls. Sometimes it is enough to simply seal the walls and the floors of the basement to keep the water out that way.

It is not uncommon for dampness in a basement to be caused by burst pipes. Or water ingress from other sources. In some cases like these simply sealing the point at which water is entering the basement is enough to solve the problem. The water goes elsewhere instead of into your basement.

Waterproofing Basements Is Complicated
It is very important to take your time and choose an experienced firm to waterproof your basement. Knowing what you are doing is crucial when it comes to basements.

There are not many firms that specialise in waterproofing basements and demand for the services for those that do it is high. This means that you may have to wait a few months before they can do the job for you. However, do not be tempted to simply hand the job over to an ordinary builder. They do not have the experience to do the job properly and probably will not guarantee their work like a specialist firm can.

Home Counties have been waterproofing people’s homes for decades. They have years of experience of waterproofing basements.
