Look After Your Basement With Basement Waterproofing

November 17, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

If you own a property which includes a basement, you should seriously consider basement waterproofing. As the basement is underground, it will struggle which much tougher conditions than the rest of the property, so it needs a higher level of protection against water and damp than the rest of a property. This is because the basement is likely to be completely surrounded by damp soil and that could be a problem should steps not be taken to ensure it is waterproofed.

Why You Should Invest In Basement Waterproofing

With a basement, there is a very real change that water will seep through the walls, into the structure. Not only can this cause serious structural problems such as foundation cracks, damp and even flooding, but it will also likely ruin any furniture or other items you have in your basement. As it can be very expensive to repair structural damage and to replace any furniture and electronics in the basement, it is often a much more affordable choice, in the long run. To have basement waterproofing work done before any problems should arise.

Not only this, but a basement which is not waterproofed and which is vulnerable to seepage, could actually pose a health risk. When a building is exposed to excess moisture, mould, mildew and dampness becomes a real problem and spores which are released as a result of these problems can cause serious illness when left untreated. Basement waterproofing will help to ensure that your basement environment is healthy and will not cause a health risk.

When Should Basement Waterproofing Be Done?

By far the best time to have basement waterproofing treatments is when the building is being built, but, of course, this is not possible for many people, whose homes have been around for a while, so they should consider waterproofing their basement as soon as possible, if any concerns about water damage arise. Things such as small cracks in the basement, mould, trouble with the plumbing and very humid conditions are all signs that basement waterproofing is required ASAP.  This is especially important for anyone who lives in a particularly wet area, where rain is common.
