Its a knockout

February 4, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

As a child growing up in the seventies I have certain childhood memories of watching the television. Of course we only had three channels so we often watched the same shows as a family, unlike today when everybody’s in different rooms watching different things. Of all the great shows, none could make us laugh like It’s a Knockout. With the infectious laugh of Stuart Hall and the crazy games and costumes you couldn’t help but get caught in the madness of It’s a Knockout. There was nothing like seeing a grown man dressed as an oversized penguin rolling down a slide and ending up in a pool of water below. It’s a Knockout really was great fun for all the family to enjoy.

I was pleased that in the nineties they revived It’s a Knockout with Keith Chegwin, and although he never could compete with the legendary Stuart Hall, he was an ideal replacement. It’s a Knockout wasn’t just big in the U.K., it was also massive all over Europe with huge international competitions. It’s a Knockout didn’t quite get the same nationalistic fervour of other sports events but it was as close to Agincourt as we were going to get with the oversized knights charging at each other with their sponge lances.

So with my obvious love of It’s a Knockout I was delighted when a friend of mine from my bowling club told me about a website called www.itsaknockout.org. I checked out their website and they basically can reproduce those halcyon days of my youth with It’s a Knockout events, recreating all those crazy games, and this time I get to actually take part myself. So as a physical education teacher at our local secondary school in Hertfordshire, I had no hesitation in putting forward the idea of having It’s a Knockout at our summer fete. We had a great time, raised loads of money and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone considering a fun event.

With its a knockout games from itsaknockout.org you can be sure that you will be able to organise a event that will be fun for everyone, with our it’s a knockout games providing lots of fun for all ages.

Top Secondary Schools in Wales

January 21, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

If you are considering moving to Wales and you are a parent, it’s important to ensure that there is a suitable secondary school for your children. Secondary education is crucial in helping equip your children with the grades they need to help them progress to higher education in an increasingly competitive university admissions system, but also providing them with the life and social skills they need for their adult lives.

You are fortunate that Wales is home to some of the best schools in the UK. Want to provide your children with a quality education in Wales? Now is the time to do your research on some of the top secondary schools in Cymru.

Mary Immaculate High School, Cardiff

This very impressive school sets out to provide a quality education for its pupils in order to prepare them for the challenges of adult life. A Catholic School, it is proud to serve the Catholic community of Cardiff, as well as pupils from other religious and non-religious backgrounds. The school not only ensures top grades that will help pupils amidst growing competition for university places, but it also equips them with a sense of morality guided by the gospel values to make them better people. Cardiff is becoming an increasingly popular place to live – with its unique attractions, world-class entertainment and sport and quality shopping facilities, it isn’t all too surprising.
Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Swansea

Since it was founded in 1984, the school has consistently attained high academic standards at all levels. As well as being successful academically, the school enjoys similar success through its vibrant extra-curricular life and in particular in its sporting life. One of the greatest strengths of Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr is that it regards every pupil as an individual and can tailor their education around their individual needs. The school is situated in Swansea in South Wales, which is certainly an appealing place to live due to its impressive contrast of bustling city and stunning countryside, historic and contemporary architecture and of course the grand parkland and throbbing surf.
Homes for Sale

For top secondary schools in Wales, these two schools should certainly be considered. Situated in Cardiff and Swansea respectively, these are two cities which are highly rated in terms of living quality and facilities. There are many homes for sale in both Cardiff and Swansea and there are many affordable dwellings for first time buyers who are trying to get their feet on the property ladder.

The most luxurious apartments in Abu Dhabi

January 21, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

Abu Dhabi is renowned as one of the world’s most expensive cities, so if you are looking for some of the city’s most luxurious apartments, then you certainly have plenty of choice. The following are some of the best areas to look for some of the most luxurious apartments Abu Dhabi has to offer.

Luxury Apartments

One of the most popular and affluent areas of the capital with those looking for luxury apartments is Al Bateen area, which is on the island’s western side and covers the coast between the InterContinental Hotel and 19th Street. Its residential areas are especially popular, with a wide range of apartments that attract high prices. Al Bateen is peaceful and spacious, with plenty of green spaces, and offers a glimpse of the ‘old’ Abu Dhabi, making it a great choice as a part of the city in which to rent a luxury apartment.

Al Khalidiyah is another popular part of the city in which to rent an apartment: it is a green and leafy suburb located between 26th and 32nd streets, from 11th Street to the Corniche. Among the luxury apartments that can be rented here are high rise towers and other modern buildings. The surrounding area is also attractive, with plenty of public parks and local shopping areas. Abu Dhabi Public Beach can be found near here, as can the expanded walking area through the Corniche.

It’s also well worth remembering that the emirate also has nearly 200 outlying islands along its coast. Many of these, such as Yas Island, are being developed for tourism and residential purposes, which will naturally increase the availability of luxury apartments in the area.

Seafront Apartments

Among the expensive apartments that can be found in Abu Dhabi are those at the seafront at Marina Bay, which is on the Al Reem Island. Marina Bay is a remarkable 25 storey residential tower with retail and prime commercial space. Built by some of the world’s most renowned architects, it offers a luxurious living experience and also has strong green credentials, having optimised eco-friendly equipment and intelligent integrated building management systems. There are many other reasons why Marina Bay is a great place to rent as a luxury apartment. It overlooks the main business bay and has a grand reception area and guest lounge, as well as a health club. It also has pleasing blended landscaping and offers beautiful views of the canal, making it a great choice as a luxury Abu Dhabi apartment.

The Top Train Sets to Buy this Christmas

January 21, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

There is a range of great train sets that you can buy this Christmas, depending on several factors. These include whether you are a child or an adult, and whether you are just becoming interested in train sets for the first time or have a long standing hobby.

If you are buying for young children, for example, there are many great train sets with a more fantasy emphasis. One of the most sought-after train sets to buy this year is the Toy Story 3 Train Set from Hornby, which is based on the very popular Disney Pixar film. This adventure-filled set involves Buzz and Woody riding on top of the train, and includes a western style locomotive, three carriages and a desert scene track mat that measures approximately 1150 mm x 820mm. Also included in this set is a controller and wall mounted transformer.

If your children enjoy Thomas the Tank Engine, meanwhile, it could be a great idea to choose a suitably themed train set such as the Hornby Thomas & Friends Passenger & Goods Train Set, which allows you to hook Thomas up to his coaches, Annie and Clarabel, or to a small goods load. This Thomas starter set includes a basic oval track in addition to a siding with buffer and a controller and mains transformer. Alternatively, you may be in the mood for something altogether different, such as the Codename: Strike Force Train Set, which is an all-action, military themed train set including a camouflaged train that is carrying badly needed supplies to the troops.

There are also plenty of train sets that are perfect for adults. These include Hornby’s Flying Scotsman train set, which features the world’s most famous locomotive and train and is a great example of high range Flying Scotsman memorabilia. Finished in its distinctive LNER apple green livery, the Class A1 Flying Scotsman evokes the golden days of train travel in the 1930s. The Hornby TrakMat is also included in this set which easily accommodates the large oval of track and two sidings.

Also available for adult enthusiasts this Christmas is the London 2012 Olympics Train Set, which features a Hitachi Class 395 model that is decorated with the Olympic and Paralympic sports pictograms. Also included is a specially prepared TrakMat that features some of the venues of the forthcoming London 2012 games. Both of the power cars have lights that operate in the direction of travel, while a numbered limited edition certificate is also provided.

Fans of the train, and other travellers alike, can take advantage of a great piece of British heritage. In the time being though, fans can find a range of Flying Scotsman memorabilia and miniature models.
