Is Anger Bad For Our Health?

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Hi, I am prabhakar. Last week i have read an article about Anger Management, and i would like to share why anger is bad for our health?, We all lose our cool now and then.True, the occasional anger-induced tantrum is an inescapable part of human life, experts say.Yet there is a distinction between normal anger and anger that’s unhealthy and destructive.
“Anger, in general, is healthy,” explains Dr. Carole D. Stovall, a Washington, D.C.-based psychologist who consults individuals and corporations on issues such as anger management. “Just like sadness or happiness, it’s a normal emotion. Where people get into trouble is when anger becomes a behavior that is physically, verbally or emotionally inappropriate.”If somebody accidentally bumps us in the subway, that’s an irritation, but if we explode over that, it’s clearly more than that person bumping us,” explains Stovall, noting that chronic and excessive anger usually indicates deeper issues in a person’s life.
“When we’re angry, there’s damage done to the systems that keep us healthy,” says psychologist Dr. Ernest H. Johnson of Raleigh, NC, author of Brothers on the Mend: Understanding and Healing Anger for African American Men and Women. “So we’re more prone to cancer, including this prostate problem that a lot of men are going through. In the end, for many people who have problems really expressing and dealing with their feelings, there’s early mortality–dropping dead from a stroke or a heart attack, kidney disease or breast cancer.”

Napoleon v. Washington

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Among the great military leaders, it is difficult to say which had the greatest impact on modern society because it is difficult to even imagine where one would be without their strategic advances and contributions. In the late 18th century, General George Washington led the American milita and Continental army into battle against the British, and in an unprecedented victory defeat the British military, considered one of the strongest armies during this period (Lengel, 2007). Without Washington’s superb leadership during the American Revolutionary War, there would be no America today. However around the same period in Europe, Napoleon Bonaparte was rising into a military force to be reckoned with, and his achievements as a military leader forever impacted modern European history. At the height of the Napoleonic Empire “Napoleon controlled and dominated much of continental Europe,”(Durant, 1975). His legacy reaches into philosophical thought and political ideas but it is in his military achievements that Napoleon stood apart from the rest. By examining the lives of Washington and Napoleon it is easy to see that it was Napoleon who had the greater military strengths was able to make the most advances in warfare technique.
Washington’s first military experience came when he was appointed as a major in the Virginia colonial militia at the young age of twenty. In 1754, Washington led a small expedition into the Ohio River valley on behalf of Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia to demand that the French withdraw from the British territory on the Ohio frontier. The French attacked his company, forcing Washington to surrender, and sending them back to Virginia in what was Washington’s first experience of military combat. Dampened by this defeat, Washington resigned his commission but found himself rejoining the militia in 1755 as a lieutenant colonel and the aide of General Edward Braddock. In this post, Washington went back into the Ohio Valley frontier and in an ambush attack, Braddock was killed, giving Washington charge over the remaining militia member and leading them to safety. For his bravery and leadership during this episode, Washington was promoted to colonel and in the Seven Years’ War between Britain and France, he led the defenses of the western Virginia frontier into battle.
As hostility between the colonies and Britain grew, Washington took an active place in politics, serving for seventeen years in the House of Burgessess. After war was declared in 1775, Washington showed up before the Continental Congress in his military uniform, offering his services. At his sight, Congress passed a bill authorizing the formation of the Continental army and giving Washington full command over them (Weir, 2006)

Tired is another monday morning

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

It’s Monday morning and you have hit the snooze button on the alarm five times which means it’s too late to take a shower and if you don’t get out of bed now, you’ll also miss your ride. So you roll out of your sleep, grab a clean shirt and look for your backpack. It’s in the kitchen and while you are there you grab the orange juice carton out of the fridge but it looks like your brother beat you to it and it’s empty. You can hear your ride honking outside and you quickly check yourself in the mirror before you leave. Hair undone, sleep wrinkles still on your cheek, mismatched socks and probably a million and one things forgotten. The day just started and you are already exhausted from the effort of getting out of bed.
You have two classes this morning before you make it to lunch and then, another torturous class before swim practice. You’ve done this routine many times before and you tell yourself that this is just another day. In your first class you realize you didn’t do the assignment and while everyone does corrections, you space out and doodle on your notebook, chin in hand, and still dreaming about sleep. You keep yawning and everyone’s liveliness so early in the morning is annoying. The girl in front of you keeps turning around to say something in her irritating voice, she comments about the sleep creases on your cheek and you just give her a blank stare. She doesn’t say it, but she’s the type who would say something like “Looks like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays” with a huge grin. No one should have to put up with her on Monday morning. It’s exhausting just to listen to her nasally voice and you wish you never got out of bed. But luckily things will get better during your second class, mostly because she won’t be there to annoy you.
In your next class the teacher is funny, your best friend sits behind you and you don’t mind the assignments because it’s something you are good at. Unfortunately the teacher isn’t there today and you have a substitute who is subjecting the class to watching a documentary film from the eighties. And of course because she’s a substitute, she’s making everyone take a page of notes, ruining your plan to catch up on some sleep. Your best friend keeps whispering things about the substitute–how her breasts look crooked and maybe she’s one of those people with three nipples–and you try your hardest to ignore him to keep from laughing out loud. Turns out the documentary is so boring and full of useless information that you manage to take a page of notes in the first 10 minutes. You put your head on the desk, and have a dream about your alarm going off and reaching for the snooze button but your best friend wakes you up because the lunch bell has rang.
