Tired is another monday morning

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

It’s Monday morning and you have hit the snooze button on the alarm five times which means it’s too late to take a shower and if you don’t get out of bed now, you’ll also miss your ride. So you roll out of your sleep, grab a clean shirt and look for your backpack. It’s in the kitchen and while you are there you grab the orange juice carton out of the fridge but it looks like your brother beat you to it and it’s empty. You can hear your ride honking outside and you quickly check yourself in the mirror before you leave. Hair undone, sleep wrinkles still on your cheek, mismatched socks and probably a million and one things forgotten. The day just started and you are already exhausted from the effort of getting out of bed.
You have two classes this morning before you make it to lunch and then, another torturous class before swim practice. You’ve done this routine many times before and you tell yourself that this is just another day. In your first class you realize you didn’t do the assignment and while everyone does corrections, you space out and doodle on your notebook, chin in hand, and still dreaming about sleep. You keep yawning and everyone’s liveliness so early in the morning is annoying. The girl in front of you keeps turning around to say something in her irritating voice, she comments about the sleep creases on your cheek and you just give her a blank stare. She doesn’t say it, but she’s the type who would say something like “Looks like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays” with a huge grin. No one should have to put up with her on Monday morning. It’s exhausting just to listen to her nasally voice and you wish you never got out of bed. But luckily things will get better during your second class, mostly because she won’t be there to annoy you.
In your next class the teacher is funny, your best friend sits behind you and you don’t mind the assignments because it’s something you are good at. Unfortunately the teacher isn’t there today and you have a substitute who is subjecting the class to watching a documentary film from the eighties. And of course because she’s a substitute, she’s making everyone take a page of notes, ruining your plan to catch up on some sleep. Your best friend keeps whispering things about the substitute–how her breasts look crooked and maybe she’s one of those people with three nipples–and you try your hardest to ignore him to keep from laughing out loud. Turns out the documentary is so boring and full of useless information that you manage to take a page of notes in the first 10 minutes. You put your head on the desk, and have a dream about your alarm going off and reaching for the snooze button but your best friend wakes you up because the lunch bell has rang.

Making a Good Business Card Copy

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Aside from the design, there is one other important factor that you need to consider when creating your business cards: the copy. This actually refers to copywriting, which is the way you sell with words. You can actually create the most attractive and compelling design, but if it is not able to tell your target customers the right message, you are likely to lose your prospects. This is why it is important to create a good copy that will sell your business and the products and services you offer in the most persuasive manner.

The following are ways to make a captivating copy:

• Use a catch phrase to draw your prospect’s attention. Make sure to create a catch phase such as a tag line, slogan, or jingle that attracts attention and tells your target customers of the products you offer and the benefits they will get from them. Also, think of your unique selling proposition or what’s makes you different from your competitors and tell it to your prospects. Don’t just tell them how great you are because honestly people don’t care about that. What they want to know is what you can do for them. Think about that when making your catch phase. Remember not to make it very long as there is not enough room in your business cards to accommodate a long tag line.

• Chose the words that you will use carefully. As much as possible use striking and attention-grabbing words but be sure to use words that are easy to understand and can deliver your message and contact details in the quickest way. Obviously, if your target market is kids you can’t use complicated and flowery words. The same with the older market. You can’t expect everyone to understand the fancy words that you will use. so, be very careful in the words you use in your business card templates.

• Tell people why they should contact you. In any effective marketing campaign, you need to make sure that you give your prospects reasons to contact you. This information will help your business in so many ways and make sure that people will keep your card and contact you right away. Here are some of the reasons why people buy, which you need to keep in mind:

o To find comfort
o For their safety
o For their enjoyment
o To make their lives easier
o To save time and effort
o To be popular
o To be in style
o To make money
o To satisfy their cravings
o To gain possessions

These are just some of the reasons people buy. Keeping these ideas in mind will help you create a copy that will encourage your target customers to become loyal patrons.

• Apply everything you know in creating your copy. Now that you know how to create a copy and the reasons why people buy, you should be able create your own business card that will stand out with compelling words. If you are able to do this it would be easy for you to motivate your target customers to contact you and buy the products or services you offer. Remember that your copy need not be too complex or fancy. As long as you are able to communicate your message clearly and quickly, your cards will be as effective as it can be.

Business Cards: An Important Tool in Searching for a Job

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Every job seeker should understand that a strong and striking resume is important to finding a job. When networking yourself, you need to take your resume anywhere you go. This will allow you to increase and build up your contacts, which can help you find your dream job. But what if handing out your resume is possible? How to you pass out your contact information to a potential employer? In situations like this you can use your business cards.

The business card, which is basically the same as those cards used in business, gives you the chance to provide important career and contact details to people and prospective employers you meet in social and professional gatherings.

Why use business cards?

In essence, these cards are the legal tender of meetings. If you are fresh graduate or someone looking for a career chance, you have to create your own card, but you can’t simply use your regular business card. You need to print networking cards that contain your career and contact information. You don’t have to worry of printing these cards as they can be create for a minimal investment.

If you really are serious in looking a job, then you know how important networking yourself is. You need to present yourself professionally to your prospective employers. This makes it essential to keep your cards neat, clean and crisp all the time, and don’t forget to bring them anywhere you go whether it is to networking events, job fairs, meetings, social gatherings, parties, and anywhere else you go. Don’t forget though to keep copies of your resume with you, but in most cases it is just not practical to hand a resume.

Designing and printing

Basically, your networking cards would be created in the same size and shape as standard business cards. They should also contain the same contact details, but instead of putting your business and job title, you should put your job objective. You also need to put all the important contact information such as your name, phone number, cell phone number, email address, and mailing address.

You can have your cards printed on your own, but if you want a professional looking card you can either have it printed at a local print shop or at printing companies online. If you are printing your card yourself, be sure to use a special business card paper and good business card templates.

When it comes to the design, be sure to keep the design and layout neat, clean, and simple. As much as possible, use simple fonts with size ranging from 10 to 11 points, and stick with simple, traditional colors in ink and paper. If you are seeking for a job in a creative field, you can use a creative design, but otherwise, keep the design and colors traditional and simple the same as your resume.

After you are done printing your cards, get a card holder to keep your cards clean, crisp, and in pristine condition. If will just let your cards soiled and crumpled, you only wasted your time and money designing and printing them. Keep in mind that people are always making guesses and in seeking a job first impression is critical.

Remember though that your networking cards should not replace your resume. As much as possible you should give your resume to your prospective employers, but in instances where a resume is not practical, your cards will your job-seeking and networking tool.

The other side of childrens birthday parties..

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Organising your child’s birthday party is a serious job. Once upon a time it would have been enough to play musical chairs, serve up jelly and ice-cream and play pass the parcel, before sending the kids home with a party bag that contained a slice of birthday cake and a pencil.

It is no surprise that children’s parties have been unable to escape being spoilt by image and status and our desire to show off. In some way this can be attributed to the ridiculous example provided by celebrities. We hear that Tom Cruise has paid Disneyworld to close the park for the day so his children can enjoy it, and suddenly the idea filters down to wealthy – but not celebrity parents – bringing in acrobats, clowns and a mini-theme park to their little darling’s fifth birthday.

While there may be practical reasons for the actions of Mr. Cruise – the threat of the paparazzi and fans making it physically impossible for him and his family to enjoy any public space is one of them – there is no logical explanation for the behaviour of other parents.

The problem with extravagant birthday parties for children is that it begins a vicious circle both with other parents trying to keep up and with the child expecting bigger and better year after year. A clown this year might lead to requests for a face-painter next year and before you know it, you have to hire out a petting zoo complete with ponies and bunnies that way that Gwyneth Paltrow had to for her daughter.

While spoiling a child has implications that the parents have to bear – and you could argue that they will get what they deserve – the other implications of extravagant birthday parties has an effect on other parents. You might have a load of money to throw at your child’s birthday party, but other parents might not. Unfortunately, few children realise the way that money and finances work, and it puts unbearable pressure on parents to have to tell their child they while their friend Georgie can have superhero characters at her party, they can’t.

It is sometimes the case that children’s parties, like Christmas, can swing families who are in a vulnerable financial position into debt. Would you want to be the parent that was ultimately responsible for that?

Some celebrities use their money wisely – and if you are an affluent parent this is one leaf you could take out of their book. Have a simple, low-scale party and make a donation to a children’s charity. Use the blessing of your child’s birthday to make the lives of other families more comfortable. Not only will this make you feel good, but it is an important lesson for your child to learn.

Children will enjoy a party with yummy food, fun games – you could even use educational toys – and a party bag with cake, stationary and party toys. Choose party toys that are popular with kids – ask your child for help with what’s in and what’s out. You can find both party toys and educational toys online and at all good kids’ stores. All you have to worry about it making the cake!
