Youngster shows promise on ice skates

January 13, 2011 by Mary Smith

Ice skates are popular among adults and children alike but only a small number go on to take their passion for such activities to the level of champions.

One such individual is youngster Lucy Trew. According to a report in the Chelmsford Weekly News, the student at Boswells School first put on ice skates at the age of ten for “a bit of fun” but is now very skilled at the sport.

Recently, she skated in her first big competition in Sheffield and she qualified for the long programme in novice ladies for the British Championships.

According to her coach, she is focused, determined, dedicated and hardworking. Not only this, but she also has the mental and physical capacity to become a champion.

Currently, she is trying to juggle at least five training sessions a week around her school work. This has meant she has had to start at 6am three mornings a week.

Commenting on her ability, head of PE at Boswells School Steve Sims said: “We are very proud and supportive of our budding champion who is now at a critical stage of her skating career.

“All being well, we will hopefully be following Lucy’s skating career into the 2014 Winter Olympics.”

Officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games, the event is to be staged in Russia. This will be the first time the sporting extravaganza has been held in the country.

Many parents decide to introduce their youngsters to skating, whether on ice, using rollerblades or anything else, as a healthy way of passing the time. However, sometimes the youngsters show such skill that they are able to take the discipline to the highest level and even make a career out of it.

These days, it is easier than ever to get hold of rollerblades and other such pieces of equipment and it is possible to order them online, as well as pick them up on the high street.
