Cape Town: The Mother City

January 10, 2011 by Mary Smith

A queen of cities, Cape Town is unforgettable and a worthy bearer of the name the Mother City. Few cities can match her stunning setting, natural beauty or range of outdoor activities. A city with a European head and an African heart, from boutique shopping stores to large modern malls, al fresco dining and gourmet restaurants serving local and international fare, cosmopolitan flare, culture and tradition all melted into a small but bustling city.

Cape Town Car Hire
One of the first issues to address after you arrive in the city is transport. Scooters work well for short distances, Cape Town car hire works best. Cape Town car rental is an affordable ticket to freedom on the peninsula and surrounding areas. With numerous suppliers located at Cape Town International Airport, in the city bowl and the suburbs, collection and return is quick and easy, and your taste and budget almost always catered for.

Cape Town Attractions
So what are some of the highlights of Cape Town? Car hire, map or GPS and a sense of adventure are more or less all you need to being exploring the city and her surrounds. Samuel Johnson said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” If Samuel Johnson had been to Cape Town he might have said, “If you’ve been to Cape Town and explored everything, you’ll be tired, but have experienced full living.” Such is the enormity of the experiences on offer in Cape Town. Hire a car and get busy in this action packed yet laid back environment. Explore the beaches, mountains, winelands, forests, towns and villages.

The Cape Peninsula
You could easily spend your entire holiday only exploring the peninsula of Cape Town. Car hire lets you dictate where and when to go, how long to stay and the route you take to get there. Packed with a huge variety of activities from watersports, rock climbing, paragliding to sightseeing, whale watching, helicopter rides, sailing trips and fine dining, wine tasting and shopping. Its not likely you’ll find yourself at a loose end during a holiday in Cape Town.

Table Mountain
The world famous mountain, the city’s backdrop and one of the best viewpoints from which to appreciate the grandeur of the Cape. Table Mountain is instantly recognisable, a global symbol and a mighty useful navigation tool, for those without GPS, Table Mountain watches over her residents and visitors year round. To come to Cape Town and not venture up her slopes is almost criminal. There are numerous paths up, and most of them a relatively easy hour and a half to two-hour ascent. Drive your Cape Town car hire to Tafelberg Road to catch the cable car or explore Kirstenbosch on her lower slopes before ascending via Nursery Ravine or Skeleton Gorge. The views from the top are nothing short of spectacular, imbuing visitors with a sense of omnipotence when gazing back across the Africa continent or out across an infinite ocean.
