Thought should go into choice of wooden doors, expert says

November 8, 2010 by Mary Smith

A considerable amount of thought needs to go into choosing wooden doors, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Kansas City Star, Gary Sanderson said the best type of wood and the most apt finish are two considerations that should be taken seriously.

For example, external oak doors may be the best option in certain circumstances.

He noted that in the case of doors that lead to the outside, treated wood is a good place to start. This can be primed and decorated with special paint to help increase its longevity, he said.

According to the expert, oil-based paints can be the most appropriate.

One of the factors that homeowners need to bear in mind is the fact that the products they can get will be affected by their budgets.

Value for money may be particularly relevant in the minds of consumers at present given the economic problems that have been affecting Britain since the onset of the credit crunch.

And with predictions that the country may experience a so-called ‘double-dip’ recession due to the policies being implemented by the new coalition government, the importance of this issue is not likely to fall in the near future.

One way in which people may be able to lower the cost of buying doors is to order them online, as firms often provide cheaper deals to those using the web.

Mr Sanderson said installing new wooden doors can be cheaper than repairing or replacing bits of existing partitions. Also, in addition to the cost of performing such acts of salvage, they can be difficult to get right.

Meanwhile, for those experiencing difficulties with their external oak doors and other such items, he advised: “Unless you are pretty handy, you’ll probably want to consult a carpenter if you see problems with the door jamb or threshold.”
