The different types of rugs

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

There are a few reasons why rugs exist. Many of these reasons have to do with utility, though a few reasons have to do with aesthetics. Most rugs contribute to the ambience of the room that it is in. They also make it easier for us to walk around barefoot, even during the cold winter months. The noise factor is another one that many people consider. It is for this reason that they then decide to get a rug. Rugs do a great job of keeping noise to a minimum, which is why the more upmarket establishments all have carpets instead of hard wooden floors. This provides a far better level of intimacy to the people who choose to dine there.

So what types of rugs are there on offer in stores?

There are a great selection of rugs that we can choose from when we visit a retailer such as Deals Direct. These rugs all have a different look and feel, and this is besides the differing purpose that the buyer intends it for.

Rug material

Rugs can be made from any number of fabrics. This means that some rugs may be made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton, sisal, jute, sea grass or bamboo. Other rugs are made from synthetic fibres such as viscose, rayon, nylon, acrylic or polypropylene/olefin. Some companies have made it possible to create rugs from material that has been recycled.

Rug styles

One of the more well-known rug styles is the Persian rug. This rug has been immortalised in songs, Hollywood movies, and more. But there are more styles available – Oriental rugs, transitional rugs, Flokati area rugs, Tibetan rugs, Shag area rugs, and Braided area rugs. These are only a small selection of rugs that people can buy from their favourite retailer, whether online or not.

How to clean outdoor furniture

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

Spring is in the air, which means it is time for outdoor activities.  And you don’t have to spend a fortune going on family outings. All you have to do is create a harmonious and entertaining outdoor area and you can have the best time in your own back yard.

The most important aspect of creating an entertainment area outside is the right outdoor furniture. This is a time to head to the garage to dig up your outdoor furniture. But you may be surprised that it may need some cleaning.  Dust can accumulate on the outdoor furniture over the colder months when it is in storage.

Outdoor furniture needs to be cleaned just like anything else.  Wooden outdoor furniture may need a new coat of paint, but if it doesn’t, you can merely use soap and water to clean it up. Once you wash wooden furniture you may need to replace some of the oil with lemon oil or some linseed oil to protect the wood. You can also use regular commercial outdoor cleaner for your wooden outdoor furniture.

Vinyl outdoor furniture can get dull and dim and dirt can actually stain vinyl outdoor furniture. Darker outdoor furniture attracts less dirt than what white vinyl furniture does.

If you have white vinyl furniture you can make a solution of one part bleach to three parts of water and wash the vinyl furniture with that. Be careful that your body does not come into contact with the bleach solution and do it outside where you will get plenty of ventilation. Be sure to rinse your vinyl well if you are using a bleach solution.  If you have a stubborn stain on your outdoor furniture you can soak a cloth in the solution and let it sit on the stain for about an hour and then rinse with clean water.

If your vinyl outdoor furniture is in another colour you can use a mild detergent to clean it. For mildew, add a couple of drops of bleach to the solution. Make sure you rinse your furniture thoroughly otherwise it will get a buildup of dirt on it.

Outdoor furniture can last a long time if you look after it properly. Just take a few minutes to clean it and it will look good as new. During the winter months be sure to store your outdoor furniture in the garage or any other undercover area. This will help in protecting your outdoor furniture, allowing you to use it season after season.

How to wear leggings in the summer

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

Leggings are the staple item in many women’s wardrobes, no matter their age. Women in their 50s and women in their 70s all feel comfortable wearing leggings. This should not surprise anyone, though: leggings are not the exclusive domain of the forever 21 crowd who have limited experience with frown lines and crows’ feet. Leggings are immensely slimming, or can be slimming if they are worn in a certain manner.

There is, however, a trick to wearing leggings with the appropriate amount of style and panache, and this is never truer than in the summer: leggings generally look better as part of an outfit that consists of layering. Summer temperatures may make this slightly more difficult.

Not all of us can look as elegant as a young Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s so it only makes sense that for some of us, there are different guidelines that we may want to take a look at before we wear our favourite new leggings.

The one most important guideline, which might actually be termed a ‘rule’, is that leggings are leggings, they are not pants. Adhere to this rule and nearly all other fashion faux pas can be forgiven. The reason why this is important is so that your bottom is covered.

Wear dresses and long tops over the leggings in the hot summer months. The trick is to wear something that is loose over the leggings. Anything with volume will do and make sure that it is long rather than short.

An option for summer is to wear ¾ leggings instead of ones that cover the entire leg and ankles. This will help you to stay cool and will also ensure that you can still wear your favourite outfits with the same amount of style and panache as Audrey Hepburn displayed.
