Your special occasion wear should make you feel special

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Most of us want to look our best when we receive an invitation to some event. It is for this reason that many of us have special occasion wear – we want to be as prepared as possible when the invitations for brunches, weddings and opera nights arrive. These generally occur during all times of the year but they seem to be even more popular during the hotter months.

We want to impress, sure, but we mostly want to feel a little bit more glamorous when we attend some event than on other days. Gone are the loose ponytails and the scruffy T-shirts and we reach for the little black dress, a sparkly cardigan and the pair of heels that can support our feet for an entire evening of dancing.

The surest way to feeling glamorous is to invest in something sparkly and glittery. This can be done even if you are a woman ‘of a certain age’. This special occasion wear makes us feel youthful, beautiful and mature all at the same time. Now is the time to invest in a sparkly cardigan or a dress with a mere suggestion of glitters that suit grown-ups. Your other options are to wear items that defy, invert or bend the rules just ever so slightly: tasteful mini-dresses, skinny jeans with heels, and dresses that show off your arms. Feel free to experiment in this regard.

Your accessories are also very important in this respect. You have a number of choices in this instance: wear items that complement your outfit or wear items that contrast. Choose one of these and run with it. This will make you either stand out or blend it. Both options can appeal to the same person but at different times. There are times when we want to stand out in our special occasion wear but sometimes we wish to blend in – at weddings that are not our own, for example.

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Going out for drinks with your colleagues or catching up with your friends after work is one of the best ways to get through the week. But it really is a mission to go home and change your outfit before hitting the town. Therefore you need the right outfit that is suitable for both day and night wear. Here we offer 8 tips on ways to transform your work wear into a fun and sophisticated night time outfit:

Opt for versatile clothing when shopping

Shop for quality basics, like statement dresses, blazers, black pants, white blouses, and versatile pumps. These items are great for work, and can be accessorized for night wear. All you have to do is throw on some earrings, necklaces and bangles and you’re good to go.

Wear bright colours on drink days

If you have plans on hitting the streets after work, where a bright top that screams for attention. Find out what colours look good on you and match your outfit accordingly.

Make the centre of your outfit your dress

There are many dresses available that are appropriate for work and play, but are still fashionable. Dresses also work much better than pants when it comes to showing off your shoes. If you feel a sexy pair of heels is too much for work, bring along an extra pair and slip them on before going out for the night.

Accessorise

Smart daywear for work should be easy and simple, not busy. Night wear is the time to show off your flashy side. Statement accessories can do wonders in transforming an otherwise dull outfit into something that demands attention. Keep a chunky necklace in your bag, and come the evening, throw it on and enjoy the evening.

Move your belt from your hip to your waist

Waist belts are all the rage these days, so why not cash in on the trend? Not only that, it gives your body more shape, and you can get away with it at work as well.  A thin, brightly coloured belt can add life to a simple black pants and classic white shirt.

Choose an outfit that works well with both formal and casual hair

Clothing and hairstyles have got to compliment each other. If you are confident in your smart daywear, all you can do is re-do your hair and you’re good to go.

There is certainly no reason why you cannot wear your smart daywear into the night. All you have to do is take time to think about your outfit and your can easily go from day into night.

Five Holiday Fashion Mistakess

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Often referred to as the ‘silly season’, many people think that Christmas time is the time to dress outrageous and let their true fashion sense shine through. But if you are spending the holiday season looking shinier than your Christmas tree, maybe you should re-evaluate your wardrobe. The holidays are common times when people make bad fashion decisions. But with a little help and preparation, you too can learn how to avoid common holiday fashion faux pas and enjoy holiday wear that suits any occasion..

1. Wearing too much glitz

Beading, metallic and shimmer are great for the holidays, but ever heard of the expression ‘less is more’? Too much shine and glitz can overwhelm anyone, especially if you are accentuating areas better left hidden.

2. Showing too much skin

Thigh-high miniskirts and bare midriffs may look good on the runway, but in real life almost no one can pull it off in a tasteful manner.  Holiday wear can be sexy but still leave lots to the imagination. The secret is to accentuate your best features – a lace trimmed camisole under a blazer, a slight slit on a skirt or a halter dress.

3. Getting caught with nothing to wear

Nothing is worse than getting invited to a party and discovering you have nothing to wear. But by dressing up a few basics in your closet, you can go from drab to fab in five minutes. The best thing about accessorising is that you can re-wear items and make them look completely different by accessorising.

4. Making it too complicated

The holidays can be a very overwhelming time for any woman, what with attending parties, buying gifts, and preparing for festivities. Therefore it is easy to forget about dressing appropriately during this time. An important thing to remember is to not make your holiday wear too complicated during this time.  Instead of trying to match up dressy separates, try a little black dress this season. Not only is it flattering (black has been known for its slimming effect), it will be appropriate for almost any occasion.

5. Being over or under dressed

You arrive in trendy jeans while everybody else is wearing frilly frocks, or vice versa. Being under or over dressed is not the best feeling in the world, and can make your day/evening uncomfortable. That being said, the dress code stated on the invitation can get a little confusing.  Once again, the little black dress will work for almost any occasion, accessorising as you see fit.

What size manchester should you buy?

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

Buying bedding has never been as easy as we want to believe it used to be in the ‘good old days’. This process has always been fraught with potential pitfalls, though recently this has increased to being far more of a problem. There are just so many things to consider: size, colour, material, cost, etc. This is why it makes sense to have a good think about the type of manchester you’ll be buying.

The number one question to ask yourself, however, is the one that relates to the size of the manchester. Do you want to buy the biggest size possible or do you just need a single – for yourself or for a young one who is in your care? A double size bed is probably the average size that most people have in their houses and it is also one of the more popular sizes in most retail stores.

The size of the bedding generally represents what else comes in the packet: king size manchester comprises between 6 and 8 pieces; single size comprises 2 pieces most of the time. This may also be depending on the manufacturer – some include more material and pieces with certain ranges.

It is a good idea to buy a bigger size than the one your bed needs: buy a 3/4 if you own a single bed or buy a double size if your bed is a 3/4. Do the same for beds that are queen size and try to find a manufacturer that can create something to envelop even a king size bed.

This ensures that you and your partner (or whoever will eventually sleep in the bed) can sleep comfortably and there won’t be any tugging of the manchester during your sleep at night.

One of the other most important things to consider before buying any type of manchester is what type of budget you have access to for this specific purchase. The size of this particular budget will influence not only how much you can spend on some good quality bedding, it will also influence what type of material you can spend the money on.

What to consider before buying educational toys

December 2, 2010 by Mary Smith

You may be interested in purchasing educational toys for your child but have a tight budget. Toys, especially electronic toys, can be expensive. This may lead you to consider purchasing used educational toys.

Many may scoff at the idea of purchasing used toys, but they do offer a number of benefits. One of those benefits is the ability to educate your child from the comfort of your home, without having to spend too much money doing so. That being said, you need to proceed with caution when buying second-hand educational toys. Because they are items are for a child, you need to know what you are buying first.

Before purchasing used educational toys, take box warnings into consideration. Most new toys come with boxes and instruction manuals that often outline age recommendations or warnings. You may be unsure whether the toy you want to purchase is age-appropriate for your child. In this instance, you can do one of two things – you can skip purchasing used educational toys or research the toy beforehand. This research should involve using the internet to find any warnings and the manufacturer’s recommended age range for the toy.

Recalls are another important factor to consider when buying used educational toys. The down-side to purchasing second hand is that these toys are difficult to associate with recalls. However, you shouldn’t necessarily blame toy owners for this, as they themselves probably are unaware. After purchasing a used toy, check online to see if that toy has been recalled. Examine consumer safety websites or perform a standard internet search followed by the word ‘recall’.

Missing parts and broken educational toys are another factor to take into account. When shopping online for used toys, it can be impossible to determine when the toy in question is in excellent condition. The same can be said for shopping for used toys at yard sales and thrift stores. This means that you cannot always guarantee that the used toys you will purchase will have all its parts or even work for that matter. Before buying a used educational toys, examine the toy closely before paying for it.

Consider cleanliness when purchasing second hand educational toys. If you child is still quite young, they may put the toys in their mouth. Thoroughly clean any second hand toy before giving it to your child. If you wish, you can wash them in the dishwasher, hand wash them or use disinfecting spray.

If you follow the above mentioned tips, you shouldn’t have a problem with purchasing second had educational toys.
