How to clean outdoor furniture

November 1, 2010 by Mary Smith

Spring is in the air, which means it is time for outdoor activities.  And you don’t have to spend a fortune going on family outings. All you have to do is create a harmonious and entertaining outdoor area and you can have the best time in your own back yard.

The most important aspect of creating an entertainment area outside is the right outdoor furniture. This is a time to head to the garage to dig up your outdoor furniture. But you may be surprised that it may need some cleaning.  Dust can accumulate on the outdoor furniture over the colder months when it is in storage.

Outdoor furniture needs to be cleaned just like anything else.  Wooden outdoor furniture may need a new coat of paint, but if it doesn’t, you can merely use soap and water to clean it up. Once you wash wooden furniture you may need to replace some of the oil with lemon oil or some linseed oil to protect the wood. You can also use regular commercial outdoor cleaner for your wooden outdoor furniture.

Vinyl outdoor furniture can get dull and dim and dirt can actually stain vinyl outdoor furniture. Darker outdoor furniture attracts less dirt than what white vinyl furniture does.

If you have white vinyl furniture you can make a solution of one part bleach to three parts of water and wash the vinyl furniture with that. Be careful that your body does not come into contact with the bleach solution and do it outside where you will get plenty of ventilation. Be sure to rinse your vinyl well if you are using a bleach solution.  If you have a stubborn stain on your outdoor furniture you can soak a cloth in the solution and let it sit on the stain for about an hour and then rinse with clean water.

If your vinyl outdoor furniture is in another colour you can use a mild detergent to clean it. For mildew, add a couple of drops of bleach to the solution. Make sure you rinse your furniture thoroughly otherwise it will get a buildup of dirt on it.

Outdoor furniture can last a long time if you look after it properly. Just take a few minutes to clean it and it will look good as new. During the winter months be sure to store your outdoor furniture in the garage or any other undercover area. This will help in protecting your outdoor furniture, allowing you to use it season after season.
