What to Look For in a Good Projector

December 6, 2011 by Nick Bella

Projectors are becoming more and more popular. They offer several advantages over “traditional” TVs, such as portability and size of picture. A projector delivers more “bang for your buck” than a television, and so many are choosing to play movies or computer games via modern digital projectors.

Like all tech, not all projectors are created equal. You will find that choosing a projector can be a difficult process, as, quite frankly, we don’t know as much about
the technology as we do about things like TVs. There are, however, simple things to look out for, when choosing a system for home usage.

“Lumens” essentially means brightness. It is an important thing to consider, when choosing a model. If the image isn’t bright  enough, then picture quality will be
undermined. In a room that has increased brightness you will obviously requite a projector that has greater lumens.

Just like with a television, besides size, picture quality is the most important factor to be considered. Arguably, the biggest determining factor to picture quality is contrast ratio: the higher the contrast ratio the better. Briefly, and in layman’s terms, a high contrast ratio means greater difference between the darkest colours and the lightest. So, with high contrast ratio blacks are black rather than grey, and your picture will not looked washed out.

You might know “contrast ratio” from when it is applied to TVs. In fact, lots of the terminology translates to projectors. So, “colour accuracy” is also something to look out for. Without good colour accuracy, reds will not look red, greens wouldn’t look greed – you get the picture.

There are lots of other things to look out for, such as zoom and connectors, and in a lot of cases your perfect model will depend on what you’re using it for, and where, whether it is in a small space or a larger area.
