Western Wear: Quality and Etiquette

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

While western wear may have developed a little bit in isolation out in the American west as the cattle drives and rail towns carved out what would become a very classic period in American history, but today western wear can be seen all across the country. Sure, it might be far more popular in communities in the west where it is part of the culture, but after being seen on the runway in high fashion a few times, there are very few people who would not recognize at least certain elements of western apparel, such as cowboy boots and hats. Within western wear there are different levels of dress. Obviously for those heading out to interact with horses, cattle, dust and dirt, when working wear is in a rough and tumble category of clothing all its own and is completely separate from an outfit one might wear to go out dancing in the evening.

When purchasing western wear, it is always best to purchase high quality, well-made items that will last for a long time. This is actually true across the board for many things in life. You can spend less money by spending a little more on the products and items that you use on a regular or frequent basis. Western wear can be purchased in stores as well as online. There are some items, such as cowboy boots, that you may need to try on first so that you know what styles and sizes fit you properly, then you can turn to online vendors to make your purchase.

Western wear isn’t just sold in the west of course, it can be found all over the country. So, for those who might not have been brought up wearing cowboy hats, here is a quick primer on hat etiquette:

* Remove your hat when: standing for the national anthem, passing the flag, during funeral processions, at church, in a restaurant or at the dinner table, in elevators (mostly if ladies are present.)
* Tip your hat when greeting a lady. The hat can be replaced after the greeting, including for extended conversation with said lady.
* Never show the lining of the hat when removing it. Hold the hat with the lining towards the body so that only the outside of the hat shows to others.

One tip for making sure that your western wear lasts as long as it should is to make sure that you are caring for it properly. Find out when you purchase something what needs to be done to ensure long life. This may include special cleaning and storage instructions. For example, depending on the type of leather your cowboy boots are made of will determine what kind of cleaning and conditioning you should do and how often to keep your boots in the best shape possible.

Western apparel such as cowboy boots and hats, may have developed in a small population of cattle drivers and others living in the Wild West, even today it is still used daily in some communities. However, thanks to a couple different periods of popularity in mainstream fashion, western apparel, particularly cowboy boots have become regular items in closets across the country. When purchasing cowboy boots online, you may first want to visit a retail store where you can try on different styles and sizes of boots, because different styles, sizes, and manufacturers feel and fit differently for everyone. The Boot Store has quality cowboy boots and knowledgeable staff to help you get the perfect Western wear.

How to Adapt Fancy Dress Costumes

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

So, you’ve purchased your fancy dress costume but there’s something that’s not quite right about it? Or maybe you just want to add your own personal stamp to make it more unique? Here are some ideas for adapting fancy dress costumes to suit you personally.

If a dress or robe is too long trying hemming it up, or get a seamstress to do so for you. You could also gather some of it up and pin it to your waist line. This works great for sexy female outfits.

Is the colour or fabric too bland or plain? Why not use fabric paint, sequins beads or other craft items to embellish you costume? You can do anything you want really. Try browsing some costume Web sites for ideas.

Need a hat? Buy one from a costume Web site or a costume store, or make your own. You can easily make hats from newspaper, cardboard, or fabric. There are tons of tutorials online for making various types of hats.

What about jewellery? Try making your own by stringing some beads together, or ask some older relatives or friends if they have any costume jewellery that you can borrow. Wear rings, earrings, anklets, or bracelets to add finesse to nearly any female costume.

Try adding some posh shoes or sandals to the outfit to see if it makes a difference. Or, go barefoot with bright nail polish and toe rings.

There are so many different ways that you can adapt your fancy dress costumes that this is just a place to start. Look for other elements and pieces to add to your costume at charity shops, second hand shops, handmade shops, bargain stores, your own closet, or ask some friends to help you out with your fancy dress. And remember—have fun.

Beanbags – the great space saver.

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Sometimes it’s hard to fit all of our furniture into a room, but you need to have enough sofas and chairs for everyone to sit down. At the same time, a cluttered room can look really untidy and feel small and cramped. You probably don’t need all of those seating options all of the time, so something a little more temporary will do.

That’s the great thing about the humble bean bag. You can store them in the corner of the room without taking up much space, ready to use when you have visitors round. Plus they’re great for kids. Who spend a whole lot of time down playing on the floor anyway and find the sofa a bit big and uncomfortable. When they are done playing, and want to take five and read a book or watch TV, they can just pull up their beanbags and settle down for a while.

There are so many different types of bean bag. For the little ones they come in all sorts of fun and novelty designs featuring some of their favourite characters. If you want something a little more subtle and in keeping with the rest of your interior design touches, you can find plenty of more classic designs.

While they are great for kids, they make a great option for adults too. If you are having a big gathering and you run out of chairs, beanbags are the next best thing. And they beat sitting on the floor any time. If you have the guys round to watch the big match or you’re organising a family gathering they are ideal. So if you are wondering how to resolve the dilemma of preserving space in your living room, but without leaving yourself short of seating options, these little gems are the ideal solution.

Choosing the Perfect Halloween Costume

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

If you like to be unique, you probably don’t want to show up at a fancy dress party or Halloween bash in the same costume as someone else. And you know it does happen all too often. So, how do you find the perfect Halloween costume? Here are some tips to get you started.

First, think about your own personality. What colours and styles do you like? It’s better to go with something that appeals to you rather than trying to find the weirdest or most unusual costume. This way you are less likely to show up in wearing what someone else is wearing—no one else thinks exactly how you do.

Next, think of some of your favourite things: time periods, movies, books, etc. What characters stand out to you? What eras make you wish you could time travel? Have you always been fascinated by the 1920’s? Why not go as a flapper girl? Or perhaps you prefer ancient Egypt? What about dressing as a Pharaoh or an Egyptian slave?

Halloween costumes don’t have to be one-size-fits all. Perhaps you’re concerned that if you buy from a Web site or costume store you are sure to wind up in the same costume as someone else. Here are some ways to avoid this—mix and match! Take a wig or dress from one costume and put it with a piece from another costume. Or, add your own elements to a premade costume. You can also share costume items with a friend who is going to the same party.

As you get ready for a fancy dress party, try to think about what makes you feel confident, happy, funny, or sexy. Do what makes you feel good, and don’t worry about what other people think. Halloween costumes are supposed to be fun to wear.
