Tips for beginner poker players

September 29, 2010 by Mary Smith

When it comes to learning how to play poker online, there is a steep learning curve. If you are a beginner poker player, it will be beneficial to learn as much as you can about online poker before you start playing.

Here are a few beginner poker tips to get you started on the road to online poker success:

1. Get rakeback

Before you start with the strategy, make sure you are getting a percentage of your rakeback. All poker rooms take rake from every hand you play, but some are likely to give a percentage back into your account for you to play with. This helps poker players

save a long of money in the long run.

Rakeback is a legitimate way to save money when playing online poker. If this sounds good for you, only select poker rooms that offer rakeback deals. In this way, the more money you save, the faster your bankroll will grow and the quicker you will move up the stakes.

2. Don’t play too many hands

A common mistake new poker players make is not being selective enough about their starting hands. Do not make the mistake in assuming that ‘any hand can win’. Although this is true, some hands are more likely to win than others. So be selective when playing your hands.

3. Don’t bluff too much

Despite what many people think, poker is not all about bluffing. Believe it or not, you do not have to bluff in order to win in poker. You may often see spectacular bluffs on the WSOP shows, but these shows are edited to only show the highlights anyways. Bluffing in poker is not as important as you think.

If you are a beginner, it is better to play your cards well rather than to attempt to bluff your opponents. Bluffing is an art, and until you know this art really well, avoid bluffing.

4. Think about your opponent’s cards

When playing poker you shouldn’t just be concerned about the cards you are holding, you should think about the cards your opponent is holding as well. It’s always good to have a big hand, but your opponent may be holding an even bigger hand.

5. Play against players worse than you

You will be surprised at how much poker players go against the simple principle of playing against those worse than you. If you are better than the players you are playing against, you are more likely to win. Remember to choose the games and limits as carefully as the cards you play with.
