How well are you feeding your pet?

December 3, 2010 by Mary Smith

The care and feeding of a pet is well worth looking into, no matter how old or how young the pet is. This one aspect of owning a pet will affect much of the pet’s life:  pet insurance premiums is but one of these.

There are a number of items that comprise a good diet. Look at the ingredient labels of the food you buy your furry friends for information on what to buy your pet and what to shun in favour of healthier food. This will help them to lead healthier, longer, and more active lives. Food ingredient labels should list the ingredient that comprises most of the item, first, and it should list the rest of the ingredients in descending order.

Some foods have special ingredients that help to fulfil functions that are necessary in any pet’s diet. These functions can only be performed by these foods or food groups. There are also a couple of other things that pet owners should consider – these things can make a big difference to the pet’s health and to the pet health insurance that they are paying for every month.

Water is one of the most important aspects of any pet’s diet and this is something that some people may forget or overlook. The pet may become dehydrated if they do not ingest enough fluids on a daily basis so try to keep as much water around as is possible.

All animals need fats in order to live healthy lives.  This is not something that pet owners should skimp on – pets need fats to have bushy tails and shining eyes. This does not mean that your pet health insurance will never pay out; it will still be there for the more serious, life-threatening emergencies – Fluffy decided to investigate a ball and ended up chewing it.

Choose foods that are age, race and size appropriate. It will not make much sense to feed a cat food that should, by rights, go to a dog, and vice versa.

Some of the foods that are the most suited to animals are the ones that will ensure their pet health insurance plan will be a worthwhile complement to the other things you have decided to get them. These foods are typically based on animal-based protein groups and offer pets a far superior form of nutrients.

But do not leave out fibre, which should be as important in an animal’s diet as it is in a human’s. Do this and your pet will thank you profusely.
