Getting the Right Pet Diet

August 29, 2011 by Nick Bella

A pet diet is far more important than you might realise. With humans, if we only ever ate junk food, we would be likely to put on weight, feel lethargic, look a mess and get ill more and more frequently. The same goes for our animals and, surprisingly, the majority of ordinary pet food brands are packed full of ingredients that, were we our pets, the majority of us would stay well clear of.

Many pet foods are high in fats, sugars and all the preservatives and additives we actively try to avoid ourselves. In turn, our pets can very quickly lose that energy and zest for life they have when we first get them and can instead become almost morose.

Many foods will include ingredients that simply bulk up the food to make it look like there is more than there is, using starch to replace what should be good, healthy cat or dog nutrition.

Finding the right pet diet may involve spending slightly more than you would on the usual shop brands, but by buying your food from companies fully focussed on cat and dog nutrition such as Hill’s Pets, you are likely to not only improve the health and happiness of your pet, but also save money in the long run by reducing the amount of vet’s bills you face.

The important things to look for are proteins, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates, avoiding anything high in fat or sugar. It is easy to find pet foods that make claims to being healthy and well-balanced, but a small amount of research will often turn up a great number of things they are not telling you. The better the quality of food, the nicer it will be too, and as a result you might also find that your fussy pet suddenly becomes far happier to get stuck into their dinner.
