How can pet insurance benefit my pet?

January 29, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

Pet insurance might not be something the average pet owner thinks about often. This type of insurance is normally affordable – except when your pets are old – and has been around since Claes Virgin, a Swede, created the first insurance policy in the late 19th century.

But pet insurance outside of Europe is patchy because few people know about it. They might be unaware of the cost and benefits. And not everyone knows that dogs and cats are only some of the animals that can get pet insurance; you can get insurance for your amphibian, opossum, bird, tortoise, chameleon, chinchilla, or hedgehog.

Your pet gets the care and attention they need

And they can get it immediately, not when you can finally have the money to pay for the operation or procedure.

Your pet need not be ‘put out’

Instead of getting ‘put out’ your pet can get the treatment they need to continue being the little pest you love so much.

Accidents need not curtail their enjoyment of life

Animals should have the freedom to enjoy life. Fleas, heart conditions, accidents, and cancer could all hamper your pet’s enjoyment.

They can phone home if needs be

Sometimes pets get lost or someone steals them. Pet insurance can help them get home: rewards for recovering the animal, posters and even advertising can help the animal get back to the home it loves.

What to do with a stray pet

January 29, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

With more and more animals getting stolen, pet identification tags are a necessity. They help to identify a lost animal and hopefully to return the animal to their owner.

But how many people know what to do when they find a lost animal? Many may want to call the police; some would take the animal home; only a few would know to call their local animal shelter.

Different animals need different handling

Cats and dogs are different beasts. And the differences within the species could also present the Good Samaritan with some hair-raising scenarios. Be careful when trying to approach a lost dog. It’s a rare feral cat that will tolerate getting picked up by a human. Domesticated cats and dogs – especially ones with pet tags – are more likely to be friendly.

Do not try to chase the dog; instead, it would be best to call your local animal control.

Sometimes animal control knows better than you do

They’ve rescued more animals than you have so contact them when you see a stray dog wandering around. Makes notes of the animal’s characteristics: sex, breed, size, and colour. Where is the animal and is it moving into a different direction? Some animals may drift into a space that you can lock up until the animal control people arrive.

What now?

Check the animal to see whether there’s a pet tag that has its owner’s information. Phone the number on the identification tag. Animals without pet tags need a different tactic. Take the animal to an animal shelter. Animal shelters have their own rules so find out how long they’ll give the owner to claim the animal. Animal shelters often give owners 3 days to claim their lost pet and will allow you to adopt the pet after this period. Others may insist on putting up ‘found’ notices in the area first.

More tips that can help you and the animal

Try to keep a leash in your car or handbag whenever possible. Previously loved animals, on average, would be much friendlier than wild ones.

Access control is sadly a part of modern life

December 23, 2009 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Security, whether we like it or hate it, is very much a part of modern day living. Whether it’s a home burglar alarm, security gates into public buildings or turnstiles into public parks, the old adages still remain. Prevention is better than cure, better to be safe than sorry and the list goes on. It is very much an access control society that we live in, whether rightly or wrongly, and one that has bred through fear and mistrust.
It can however be very frustrating to have to remember any number of different codes for security doors and alarms, and people become unstuck very often. One of the worst scenarios is not remembering the key code when the burglar alarm goes off, which has happened to us all from time to time. If your burglar alarm is connected to the police, this can be embarrassing and expensive.
However, there are other solutions to this problem and the latest access control readers remove the need to remember a succession of numerical codes, or jot them down on post-it-notes and stick them in your wallet. These vary from swipe card, to short and long range proximity readers, and the new generation of biometric readers which scan finger print, hand and retina for recognition.
It is becoming increasingly popular at work and in the home to use these new electronic door latch releases. Companies like us at P & Q provide proximity, swipe and biometric readers for any number of functions such as opening car doors from a distance, security gates without the need to get out of the car, and provide easy office access by just laying a hand over a scanner.
The access control technology does the rest, and you don’t need to worry about forgetting the door code and setting off the alarms.

When regaining access is priority

December 20, 2009 by James Lewis 2 Comments

It is not enough that insurances usually provide financial recourse for any subsequent damage to locks. The most important criteria for any person is to actually regain access to the premises with the minimum of delay as the impact on a business can be expensive.
It is surprisingly how often owners of a spare key have been unavailable or the spare key is actually inside the premises, safe and sound, and of no use to anyone. It is at this time that homeowners and businesses need to ensure they have access to a reliable and professional locksmith.
With the cost of replacement external and internal security doors and of course, the financial straightjackets that many businesses are working to at the moment, it is extremely important to be able to call on the services of a locksmith company that is able to secure you access without causing too much damage and be able to carry out door repair or even replacement of your access point with the minimum of fuss and delay.
It may be advantageous for companies with units situated around the country in the major cities to have an arrangement with a single locksmith service provider who is able to provide nationwide cover.
Breaking a lock may not always be necessary to gain access, with technology constantly moving forward, it may even be possible to get a specialist locksmith to design a master key for future use.
At Lockaid, we are a company with over 100 years of experience with a team of professionals ready and able to offer security advice and other professional locksmith services throughout the day or night and we can also offer door repair where necessary. Whether you need a locksmith in London or a locksmith in Birmingham, we have a locksmith on hand to help.
