How to create a romantic bedroom

May 17, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

The first step to creating a romantic atmosphere in the home is concentrating on the main bedroom. A bedroom should be a place of comfort, tranquility, safety and peace. The place you go to unwind after a long day, or the place where you spend time with your loved ones.

To create the perfect romantic setting in your bedroom, you need to start with the basics – curved lines, pastel shades, floral patterns, soft fabrics and intimate lighting.

Start with luxurious bedding

The bed takes pride of place in any bedroom, and is usually the main attraction. Therefore, your bed should epitomise romance and luxury on every level.

Stay away from stiff fabrics and hard lines to create a soft and sensual effect.

When most people think of a romantic bed, they think of a canopy bed. While it is not necessary to go out and purchase a canopy bed simply to make your bedroom more romantic, it does bear a certain romantic appeal. To create an equally sensual setting with an ordinary bed, attach a few metres of fabric in a rosette or on a hoop to the wall behind the bed. Look for pictures online on how to achieve a perfect make-shift, yet utterly romantic, canopy for your bed.

Next on the agenda – bedding. The right bedding goes a long way when creating a romantic atmosphere in the bedroom. Soft, sensuous fabrics need to be used. Enhance your bed with silk or satin sheets. Luxurious cashmere bedding will offer a five star feel with extra comfort and luxury.

Scatter some cushions around to add a care-free touch

Don’t forget about pillows and cushions. Soft, luxurious pillows provide an added sense of luxury and comfort. Ideally, there should be at least 6 large pillows and an assortment of throw cushions scattered around. Choose pillows of various sizes, shapes and textures – factors that appeal to the senses.

Pillows trimmed with lace, satin and ribbons add an extra romantic appeal. Ruffles and floral print always work well in a romantic setting, but do not go overboard. Remember, when it comes to romance, simplicity is always key.

Choose romantic fabrics and colours

Choose fabrics and colours that are soft to the touch and on the eye. Fabrics that exude romance and sensuality include velvets, velours, sheer fabrics, silk, satin and mohair. Fabrics like soft cotton and linen are also great at highlighting a romantic setting. Again, a cashmere throw offers comfort and luxury.

Florals are usually associated with romance. Pick florals with large dramatic prints and in soft pastel colours like lavender, pale pinks and claming blues.

Finally, create the perfect romantic atmosphere with intimate lighting

Bright light create an industrial, busy atmosphere. And no light at all is just silly. Intimate low lighting is ideal for setting a romantic mood. Light a few candles (use protective candle holders and covers as candles are fire hazards) and put them at various spots around the bedroom. Nothing romances a room more than the right lighting.
