Dangers of online gambling addiction

March 31, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

As with all thrilling things, there is a certain group of people who go overboard with the gambling experience. They spend too much time at the casino or online casino, they spend too much money, and they become hermits whose only form of interaction is with the other casino players.

There are a number of dangers that we associate with gambling addiction. But more so, there are also a few myths that persist, even after years of outreach programmes. And these myths can be as damaging as the resultant dangers of gambling.

One of the more damaging myths is that online gambling increases gambling addiction, presumably because of the ease of access. This statement infantilises gamblers and it takes away their capacity for making their own decisions. Gambling problems are impulse control problems and fall into the same category as alcoholism.

* The first warning sign is when the person spends all their spare time gambling. Where previously they had had hobbies and interests, now all they can think about is their next big win.
* Small wins no longer satisfy them: they need bigger and bigger wins to get the same ‘high’ from gambling.
* Gambling addicts may become restless or irritable when they try to limit the amount of money, time, or attention they’re spending on online gambling.
* Gambling becomes a problem when it’s done to relieve tension and stress from work or the family. The gambler turns to their favourite hobby during one of their dark, depressed moods and hopes to forget about the problems, only to lose even more money because they can’t concentrate properly.
* One of the big red warning signs of a looming gambling addiction is when they return – sometimes on the same day – to get ‘even’ after they lost a substantial amount of money. They want to make up for the lost money and forget that the potential to lose even more money is still there.
* Gambling addicts often lie to their family, friends, employers, and therapists. They have to lie so that they can conceal the extent of their gambling habit. They’ll often commit illegal acts – theft, fraud, forgery, or they’ll embezzle funds so that no-one will find out just how much money they’ve spent on online gambling.
