Blackjack basics

June 29, 2010 by Mary Smith

Some say that blackjack is one of, if not the most widely played casino banking game. Whether this claim is true or not, it is undeniable that blackjack is popular. It may help that blackjack is a really simple game to play so more people feel comfortable to try it out. The other reason why it has experienced such a big surge in popularity might have a bit to do with the supposed ease of beating the house, though very few players have ever succeeded in this endeavour.

The number one rule of blackjack is to get a hand whose value is as close to 21as possible. Hands whose values exceed 21 are bust so it is important to get a hand with a value of 21 or less. This means that players disregard the different suites and concentrate only on the numerical values of the cards. Numbered cards’ values are displayed on the front of the card; all other cards have differing values: Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth 10 points but Aces are worth either 1 or 11 points.

The one other thing that may differentiate blackjack from other games is that players play against the dealer and not against each other. The dealer shows each player a card and the player should use this information to make an informed decision about the remaining cards.
