Discover what goes into a protein bar

January 13, 2011 by Mary Smith

There are a host for options to choose from when looking for a protein bar. Quite apart from the different flavourings available, the mix of ingredients allows them to be effective for different things. Understanding what is in each, therefore, is essential whether looking at solutions for body building or weight loss.

The biggest single difference regards the calorie count. These can vary significantly, from very low levels to high amounts. Carbohydrate levels too will vary considerably. Both of these values are critical at either end of the scale for those looking at increasing or decreasing body mass.

Another area to be aware of is the fat content and more importantly, the types of fat which the bars contain. Trans fat levels particularly need to be looked out for, whilst polyunsaturated fats can be consumed in much higher quantities.

All other ingredients should be carefully checked as well. Pulses, seeds and nuts are popular, but some of these may cause allergic reactions in some people. Artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols which are often added can also cause some problems, with stomach cramps and other gastro issues again affecting some people.

There are rarely problems when eating a protein bar however, and they are a handy source of energy to keep going through exercise and workouts. It is important to understand that they are far from a meal replacement, though. They are a supplement to a healthy and balanced diet, and far better than snacking on other processed foods.

At My Protein, we have the best selection of sports nutrition to help those looking to get fit or who are stepping up their fitness regimes. With a team of experts trialling each product we sell and always selecting the most nutritional and flavoursome products, we make sure each customer gets just the right supplement no matter the need.
