What is carbon neutral fuel? neutral

March 10, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

There are some scientists in the United States who claim that they’ll soon be able to create fuel from air. While there are a couple of caveats, ie, they’d need nuclear power, this is still an interesting claim. But it needs refinement and is nowhere ready for use by us, the normal people in the world.

So until such time, we have to be content with what carbon neutral fuels we have at the moment. But there is some confusion over the term and it is always good to get back to basics over something like this.

Carbon neutral fuels are fuels that do not extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere when we burn them. Another slightly different definition is that carbon neutral means offsetting these gasses by planting a tree to compensate for the release of carbon dioxide.

So that’s the basic definition but how do these fuels differ from other fuel types?

All plant-based fuels differ in one way from fossil fuels: plant-based fuels only store carbon for a short period; fossil fuels store carbon for millions of years. This means that the plants do not release any extra carbon dioxide into the air when we burn it; instead, the carbon dioxide gets recycled. The time it takes to get recycled is a lot less than the time that global warming effects take.

So what this really means is that while the plant was growing it took some of the carbon dioxide from the air. This very same carbon dioxide gets put back into the air now that the plant is burning.

What does this mean for your household? It means that biomass heating is a great choice for your family’s heating needs. There are a number of heaters available to you and these machines help to minimise your costs as well as the emissions from the materials.

Baxi’s multiheat biomass boiler systems are ideal for people who want to do their bit for the environment. And what makes this system even more attractive is the familiarity – we’ve been using it for generations; it’s only these days that we want to give it a fancy name.
