What Is a Forex Broker?

November 11, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

A Forex broker acts as a middleman by matching buyers and sellers of currency with each other.  The reason they are called Forex brokers is that Forex is the main currency market, hence the name.

Choosing a Forex Broker

There are plenty of Forex brokers to choose from; however you have to understand that the market is still relatively unregulated.  As a consequence it is important to do your research and take your time before choosing your Forex broker.

Most Forex brokers require an initial deposit, as a general rule of thumb, it makes sense to look for those that will accept a low initial deposit.  They use this deposit to open your trading account, so it is understandable that they would want some money from you but if you come across brokers are asking you for thousands of pounds it is wiser to look elsewhere.

There will be times when you will need help and it is vital that the broker you choose offers good customer support.  The best ones offer this support 24/7 5 days a week in other words when the markets are open.  In most cases you will be using software to run your account, so it is important to make sure that the support offered includes IT support.

It is very important that your Forex broker has experience of trading currencies.  This sounds strange, but there are companies out there who have staff working for them who do not trade themselves or have no history of trading.  Generally speaking, these companies offer a very poor service. Experience is very important.

Many of the best Forex brokers offer temporary accounts. This can be a very good way of establishing whether they are the right broker for you.  Before settling on which Forex broker you want to use make sure that you fully understand their fees and are happy to pay them.  Take the time to read the terms and conditions before signing up with your broker.  Taking a little time to check things over will save you a lot of time and hassle in the future.

Sunbird FX is a well established Forex broker. They offer full customer support whilst the markets are open and use only the best electronic trading platforms, which are also fully supported.
