Whatever Happened to Neighbourhood Watch?

September 7, 2011 by Nick Bella

Neighbourhood Watch stickers used to be able to be seen on almost every lamppost as communities got together to ensure that crime really wasn’t going to pay. However, today, there are more and more break-ins across the country and Neighbourhood Watch seems to be just a thing of the past.

However, it is worth remembering that Neighbourhood Watch was never really anything more than a group of like-minded citizens who wanted to make their area as safe as possible As time has gone on, communities have become more fractious and with the ability to travel more easily and communicate online with anyone, anywhere in the world, there is a good chance that, today, many neighbours in many areas do not even know each other’s names.

However, this is not the only reason that Neighbourhood Watch is no longer as ubiquitous as it once was. The actually ability for such an organisation to stop crimes was limited – ultimately it was all about looking out for one another and ensuring crimes were reported. Many people now realise that most citizens will report such crimes regardless of whether or not they are part of such an organisation.

On top of this home security has changed too. With the ease with which CCTV security cameras can be installed, it is likely that people’s home security is going to be far more likely to thwart a crime than a neighbour’s vigilance.

However, CCTV can only do so much. Should an intruder not be able to be identified, they can easily get away with a great many items, many of which might be irreplaceable, and whilst CCTV security cameras are going to bring a great deal of extra safety to a home, it is still wise to look out for your neighbours. After all, if you can stop a criminal in the act, and call the police in time, there will be one less criminal you need to worry about yourself.

So even if you have CCTV and no Neighbourhood Watch, it doesn’t hurt to keep your eyes peeled anyway.
