The Importance Of Carbon Monoxide Detectors

April 5, 2012 by James Lewis

Carbon monoxide is often thought of as the silent killer. It’s odourless, tasteless, colourless, non-irritating and completely invisible to the naked eye, being incredibly difficult to detect and therefore one of the most deadly gases out there. It’s a by-product of inefficient combustion in boilers and other household appliances and is readily absorbed into the lungs, making carbon monoxide poisoning all-too likely should you be in the vicinity of a gas leak. That makes investment in carbon monoxide detectors vital for homeowners across the board, being one of the most important pieces of fire safety and fire protection equipment available.

Installing the necessary carbon monoxide detectors is more important than ever before. Appliances may be subject to incredibly strict regulations but accidents can and do happen, particularly when you consider the increased insulation of many modern homes—better insulation will of course result in lower energy bills and better heat retention but it also means that houses could potentially be even more dangerous should a carbon monoxide leak occur, because the reduced capacity for gases to escape means they could quickly build up to toxic levels. Regular servicing of your appliances will of course be essential, but to reduce the risk as much as possible it’s important to take additional fire safety precautions.

As many as 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year, but it’s thought that this figure drastically underestimates the true extent of the issue. The cause isn’t always identified meaning more people could be dying of this silent killer without us realising, so the importance of carbon monoxide detectors should never be underestimated. They should be an essential purchase for all homeowners and indeed all business owners, providing valuable peace of mind that everyone is as safe as possible. Early detection can quite literally be lifesaving making these detectors just as important as smoke alarms, so always make sure you’ve got this most vital piece of fire protection equipment and you can sleep soundly without a thing to worry about.
