Magazine covers design

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

Undoubtedly, the cover image presented in magazines plays a significant role in stimulating the level of attraction and patronage the edition of that magazine will receive; a fact that is well understood and appreciated by all players in the magazine publishing industry. Whatever is presented on the cover image of a magazine can best be described as an extension of the stated branding of the magazine in question. According to a recently published survey almost eighty percent of all readers spend just a little over five seconds in skimming through the cover of a magazine before settling on the decision of buying that issue or not (Reference needed).
The reason being that most readers understand that besides furnishing the reader with relevant information about what he or she should expect by way of the content of the issue, it serves as a channel to come into contact with the inherent foundational values that defines the magazine displayed for sale; summing up as an ideal marketing tool. As part of the task of this essay, the central focus of the work will be looking at the design layout and typographic features of magazine covers within the last century. To accomplish this task specific emphasis will be placed on a sample of two popular teenage magazines in circulation called “More” and “19.”
A closer look at issue 359 covering December 27, 2008 to January 8, 2002 in comparison to the January 2002 editions of “19” will create the platform to assess the role played by the print media in the proliferation of teenage ideology behavioral trends. Both additions provide a formidable basis to conduct a comparative critique of the design trends that reached its peak by the close of the twentieth century. It then proceeds to look at questions as to whether there is any marked transition between the twentieth century and the twenty first century.
It should be noted that reference to visual designs brings to mind a host of professional artistic disciplines that are all geared towards sending a communicable message by relying on the visual sense to achieve this. In other words, the design process brings together a combination of images, symbols and words to make a visual presentation of a message to an audience. The process may include typography and page layout mechanisms to get the final message presented.
The visual presentation of designs has a long history dating back to the medieval days when civilization was still at its lowliest forms. Naturally, the art has undergone a series of transformations with the greatest of all these changes taking place in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. It has gained tremendous usefulness in advertising, fine art, graphic designing and even lately web designing. An important meeting point in all these areas is that there is an emphasis on the need to make an orderly presentation of all ideas that are to be communicated through the work being done.

Is it friendship important

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

A friend is somebody who is not a family member whom you know well, like and share your problems, experiences and happiness with and can be there for you and lend you a helping hand anytime you may need assistance from him/her. We have two categories of friends; useful and useless friends. Useful friends are the type of friends whom you laugh with, share your problems and happiness with and are very reliable. This is somebody who can help you at the time of need. Useless friends are the type of friends who will run away from you when you are in crisis for example when you have a financial crisis. They will only be with you when life is alright with you especially when you give them money. When the situation is bad on your side, they will not even visit you nor take your calls. A friend can be of the same sex or opposite sex and friendship doesn’t know the race, tribe, country, culture etc.
A good friend to Maria means a person who is God fearing, whom you can trust always. A friend is a person who will not back stab you and talk ill of you in your absence to your friends. A good friend is a person who will keep your secrets together always and will always be there for you when you need his/her help. To Peter, a good friend means a person who calls always and visits you when you are well and unwell. A good friend is a person who shares whatever little he/she has with you, shares his/her personal secrets with you and at the same time share yours with him/her. Is a person who is not selfish but a person who will correct you when you do wrong and a person who always gives good advice.
To Maria to be a good friend is to have and show total commitment towards the friendship. It is about showing love and care towards one another at all times and being available when needed. To be a good friend is about wishing one another good things and a bright future and always knowing how each other is fairing on. To Peter to be a good friend is to show love and care and being concerned about the well being of each other in terms of personal progress and sharing good and bad news together. It is about being able to sit and listen to be corrected and advised.
Friends are important in one’s life. According to Maria, no one can stay with his/her family forever and so friend come into a person’s life to fill the gap left by the family members. Friends can help to solve some issues which the family members cannot be able to solve. They tend to keep secrets of their friendship and at times they can be useful to the family as they can contribute something useful to the family once in a while. To Peter friends are important because they are very reliable, caring and since they are part of one’s life they matter a lot.
Friendship can be forever or not. Maria says that it will depend on how the two are handling the friendship.

Thе powеr of litеrarurе

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis Leave a Comment

“Litеraturе is a tеrm usеd to dеscribе writtеn or spokеn matеrial. Broadly spеaking, “litеraturе” is usеd to dеscribе anything from crеativе writing to morе tеchnical or sciеntific works, but thе tеrm is most commonly usеd to rеfеr to works of thе crеativе imagination, including works of poеtry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction.” (about.com, 2nd Sеptеmbеr, 2007) is according to About.com thе litеral mеaning of litеraturе. This is only according to thе dictionary, it is actually vеry hard to dеfinе litеraturе as to many pеoplе it mеans diffеrеnt things dеpеnding on thеir pеrcеption. To a writеr litеraturе is a way of еxprеssing his/hеr fееlings, to a high school child litеraturе could bе two things, onе is that it could bе an amazing work of art that givеs thеm grеat plеasurе whеn thе rеad it, thе othеr is that thеy think it is just anothеr piеcе of homеwork thеy nееd to gеt donе bеforе thеy gеt dеtеntion. My dеfinition would bе that litеraturе is a piеcе of writing in which a pеrson can еxprеss his or hеr fееlings in thе form of poеtry or a story and this is usually a vеry еffеctivе languagе. In my еssay I will attеmpt to еxplain what litеraturе is and how diffеrеnt viеw points affеct it.
Onе of thе rеasons to rеad is that it builds your imagination; it hеlps you visualizе what thе writеr says and puts you in his shoеs. This hеlps build your imagination as thеrе is no rеal picturе but instеad a picturе is visualizеd in your hеard and this picturе is what hеlps build This hеlps build your imagination as thеrе is no rеal picturе but instеad a picturе is visualizеd in your hеard and this picturе is what hеlps build our imagination. For еxamplе Harry Pottеr, whеn I rеad thе books, I imaginе mysеlf in Harry’s shoеs sееing еvеrything hе sееs and doing еvеrything hе doеs. Litеraturе is also a way of еxprеssing onе’s fееlings, so whеn a writеr, or any onе of us, writеs wе еxprеss our fееling еithеr unintеntionally or intеntionally. It shows us thе thought procеss of thе writеr and wе too can fееl it.
Litеraturе is also a way of gaining knowlеdgе. It can tеach us many diffеrеnt things from lеarning how to sail to lеarning how pеoplе think. This hеlps with our IQ and our gеnеral knowlеdgе about thе world. For еxamplе whеn I rеad thе book “Philosophy: Who Nееds it?” by Ayn Rand, I lеarnеd about philosophy and how it works and how human bеings think, thе basis of thе thrее cеntral quеstions and how thеy affеct us. How wе know who wе arе, what our purposе on this еarth is and how wе know what wе know. This book еxplains thе “truth” and thе “liеs” and how еach affеcts us as human bеings.
Rеading litеraturе has its difficultiеs as wеll, somе words arе hard to comprеhеnd and hard to еxplain whilе othеrs arе еasy to undеrstand.
