Management training ‘crucial for projects’

This year will no doubt hold many challenges for businesses and one way in which they can help ensure they are ready to deal with them is to engage in management training. Such management development means bosses are better equipped to cope with the trials and tribulations they will face during 2011 and beyond.

According to J Leroy Ward from ESI International, the field of project management will be particularly important in coming months. For this reason, people involved in such tasks may be among those who could benefit most from management training.

He said: “Key themes include continuing to build on the influence of the project manager, accelerating new leadership and communication skills and using more informal learning modalities such as social media and experiential training.”

The expert went on to state: “Leadership skills, such as critical thinking, crucial communication and organisational change management, will be strategically imperative project management competencies to master.”

He also predicted that the management landscape in 2011 will feature more complex projects and greater use of virtual teams. The challenge for organisations will be to define what leaderships means, he continued.

Meanwhile, “savvy” talent management and retention strategies will be crucial to “ward off poaching” Mr Ward claimed.

He also said that the hiring, assignment, promotion and professional development of project managers will be based on “comprehensive competency models” and these will be company specific.

Because of the potentially difficult times ahead, those firms that adopt management development for the people responsible for overseeing projects may outperform their rivals. And in the current harsh and competitive economic conditions, this could be one of the factors that make the difference between success and failure.

These days, companies and individuals have access to a broad range of development courses that may benefit them in this way.

Better organisation increases productivity, business coach says

Many workers struggle to get the most from their time in the office. Whether they simply suffer from a lack of concentration or are interrupted by constant streams of emails and phone calls, getting their jobs done can seem impossible.

One of the ways in which some people choose to address this issue is by investing in business coaching. By taking advantage of tips and advice provided business consultants who know exactly how to maximise efficiency, they aim to increase their productivity and be more successful.

An expert who is involved in business coaching recently suggested that time management is the crucial skill to learn. According to Douglas Stewart, individuals need to control their distractions and implement a number of strategies if they are to achieve their goals, YorkRegion.com reports.

He commented: “Those of us who take charge of even a small part of our lives achieve enormous satisfaction and fulfilment.”

One of the common mistakes that people make is to allow urgent issues to always take priority over important tasks. This is perhaps something business consultants could help individuals avoid.

In addition, a specific thing that individuals should not do, he claimed, is to leave post it notes on computer screens. Commenting on this activity, he said: “It is distracting, stressful, reduces focus and creates a reactive, rather than proactive, work environment. Use your filing systems, task list and calendar system to determine what has to be done and when.”

Meanwhile, Mr Stewart went on to suggest that it can be counterproductive to leave things until the last minute. Although many people say this is the only way they can get things done, having an impending deadline can reduce creativity and serve to the detriment of quality, he stated.

It can also annoy colleagues and other business partners, he noted. The expert remarked: “We all know those people who we have to bug and chase to get things done that we are waiting for.”

Business coaching brought to uni students

Business coaching and management training have long been popular in the corporate sphere. After all, many organisations find such services to be a great help. And with economic conditions tough at present, the need to be as competitive and effective as possible arguably makes such provisions more important than ever.

Indeed, so valued are business coaching and management training that one organisation has decided to take services similar to these and introduce them to the world of higher education.

Recently, iGoalz Coaching announced it is offering business and life coaching to undergraduates in the US. It is targeting ambitious, high-achieving students at colleges and universities across the North American country.

According to the firm, there had been a gap in the market until this point. While professionals could access such services in a bid to enhance their careers, students could not do the same to provide themselves with a boost in terms of their prospects upon leaving their educational institutions.

Dr R C Glen, who is behind the new offering, said: “Students with … great potential often lack the practical skills and experience needed to assertively negotiate the myriad choices they face in their challenging new environment.”

She went on to note that university education does not come cheap these days and tens of thousands of dollars are spent on it. For this reason, it is vital that people make the most of their opportunities, the expert claimed.

Dr Glen added: “Managing that investment in today’s economy, where there is more competition for fewer jobs and graduate school slots, is more important than ever.”

She believes that early access to executive-style coaching ensures that those who make the most of it will hit the ground running in their professional lives.

Meanwhile, in the UK, universities are planning to gear many of their courses more towards corporate priorities in a bid to make them competitive in the new higher fees system that is due to come into place in coming years.
