How to check your home heat pump

February 26, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

You need to check your home heat pump in order to keep it working optimally and to maintain its functionality and efficiency. There are simple maintenance things that you can do to increase the life span of your heat pumps, saving you both time and money in the long run.

Keep track of settings

Make sure your heat pump is set to a comfortable but manageable temperature for optimum performance and efficiency. Frequently changing the temperature settings on your heat pump often leads to break downs. Make sure that you switch your heat pump to the appropriate mode for the current season.

Check the filter

Clean your filter regularly to maintain the life span of your heat pump. Change your filter regularly, monthly if possible, especially during seasons of heavy use. Clogged filters are inefficient.

Clean around the compressor

Your outdoor air compressor may become filled with debris from rain, trees and other outside elements. Excessive debris buildup in your compressor can lead to your compressor malfunctioning, so you a low pressure hose to get rid of the debris. A compressor, when faulty, is expensive to fix or replace, so simply cleaning it can cost you hundreds, or even thousands. Check your outdoor compressor regularly to make sure there is no debris buildup, especially during autumn.

Change the batteries

The thermostat on your heat pump will probably require batteries. Change your batteries often for optimum results.

Check refrigerant levels

Below refrigerant levels can damage your heat pump; however, checking and adding refrigerants are not ideal for DIY projects. Rather consult an expert as the work requires a special license as the material involved are hazardous to people, pets and wildlife if not handled correctly.
