Keeping Your Tools Safe

August 27, 2011 by Nick Bella

Building sites, sheds and garages all over the country are being broken into on an increasingly regular basis as criminals discover the potential black market value of these very expensive commodities.

By not keeping tools safe, victims are not only going to see themselves suffer the cost of replacing their tools, but also the cost of repairs to buildings, should criminals use force to see tools that are very easily evident from the outside.

The biggest lures will be power tools, although even cutting tools and measuring tools are unlikely to be spared by criminals looking to capitalise on the high second-hand retail rates of power tools and the like.

So how do you go about keeping your tools safe? The easiest way is to make sure you keep them locked up in secure buildings. Obviously people could still break in, but by ensuring that even the cheapest measuring tools cannot be seen from outside will ensure that potential thieves do not take the risk as a break might not be rewarded.

Also many people will leave hand or cutting tools out on the lawn in between them being used. This will make it very easy for opportunistic thieves to make off with expensive items when your back is turned, so ensure that they are not just left lying around at any time.

There are also products such as anti-tamper screws and the like which will make it far less likely that thieves will target you. So long as you look like you have taken the right precautions, the thieves are far more likely to target those who haven’t. Not only is it therefore important that you look like you hide your tools away, but also by simply adding visible security measures to your home in general, any potential intruders are far less likely to bother you.
