Oak flooring – always a favourite for the home.

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Fashions come and go in most walks of life, and home décor is no exception to this. There was a time when most houses would have basic oak flooring, but as times changed and people became more affluent, carpets began to be the favourite method of covering floorboards. By this stage oak flooring and hardwood flooring had been replaced by less robust materials, or as is often found in houses built after the 1930s, concrete floors.

Because of this it was necessary to have carpets or lino covering the floors, but because fashion is cyclical, oak flooring is back in vogue again. And not just oak flooring. These days there is a wide selection of hardwood flooring available to homeowners who want to give their property that comfortable and warm feeling which arises when you have solid oak flooring. Although it’s easy to buy hardwood flooring these days, some people have been lucky enough to avoid this expense.

There is quite often a surprise waiting for those who buy an older property when they come to rip out the carpets which have been left by the previous owner and they discover oak flooring which is in perfect condition after being covered up for years by carpets or lino. If you find yourself in this position, then you probably won’t be interested in buying oak flooring or other types of hardwood flooring, but if you have been thinking about fitting oak floorboards in your home, there is plenty of choice out there today. One of the easiest ways to go about choosing hardwood flooring of all types is to look online. By doing this you can see the huge range available, while comparing prices and the service offered by the companies selling the floorboards without leaving your home.

Where to find the best hygienic flooring for your business

February 17, 2011 by Gareth Hoyle

Hygienic flooring has long been important in a range of environments, with the most obvious perhaps being healthcare settings. New standards are also being continually set in production, preparation and vending settings, making it more important than ever that your firm – particularly if it is in one of these especially relevant sectors – has truly hygienic flooring that rejects bacteria whilst also being easy to clean and maintain.

There is a wide range of flooring solutions available that you can invest in, including durable resin flooring that is easy to clean and maintain and that is resistant to chemical spills. You may wish to invest in seamless epoxy terrazzo, for example, which uses a mix of aggregates ranging from glass, granite, mother of pearl, marble and flint and is especially suitable for restaurants and hotels.

Alternatively, you may be interested in hard wearing quartz systems, which are made up of coloured quartz granules and are particularly suitable for kitchens and wet and dry process areas where chemical spills can be a problem. Also popular are self-levelling floors, which are popular in garages and restaurants.

How to find the best company offering hygienic flooring

Whether you require new hygienic floors to be laid or have an existing floor that you would like to have polished or renovated, you are likely to be on the lookout for a company that can do so much more than simply lay floors to specification like your average building contractor. Indeed, you will appreciate a company that works closely with its clients from a pre-tender stage to identify and recommend to them the most suitable flooring solutions.

You should look for a firm that places the emphasis on a range of factors when it comes to identifying the best flooring solution for your firm’s individual needs, including environmental concerns, suitability for use, reflection ratings, design requirements, completion dates and maintenance.

The firm that you choose for your flooring should be able to offer a wealth of experience and knowledge, and offer you a free quote as part of a high standard of customer service. Power tools and the wireless revolution

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis 1 Comment

We all love wireless technology. Mobile phones, the wireless mouse on your computer, easy internet anywhere in the house, a doorbell that doesn’t require endless fiddly installation. Wires and cords are a pain and doing away with them has been one of the great achievements of electronics in the last few decades.

It’s easy to forget, in this age of information superhighways and pocket-sized computers that can do almost anything, that the wireless revolution began with bigger wires- the cords on power tools. The very first cordless tools appeared as early as 1961, decades before anyone even dreamed of wireless internet and the mountain of wireless gadgets that now grace every home.

Cords get in the way. That’s pretty obvious to anyone who has tried to plug in a DVD player or a home printer. It’s even more obvious to those of us who use serious tools in demanding situations every working day. Not only are long cords a trip hazard, they are also easily damaged, time consuming to put away neatly, and generally clutter up a space that would be better off remaining clear. Cordless tools made the workshop much tidier and far more convenient. They meant it was easier to work on ladders and in confined spaces and avoid electrical, heat, and water hazards.

Now, there is a world of difference between a cordless device- one that supplies its own power- and a wireless device that receives information without any direct physical connection. Nobody could realistically claim otherwise. However, it was innovations like cordless power tools that showed the world just how much easier it was to use a piece of equipment that wasn’t attached to a fixed point with cords or wires. Next time you log on using a wifi hotspot, remember to thank your faithful cordless drill!
