Innovative approach to space saving

August 22, 2011 by Nick Bella

No matter what the size of the available storage space is, the likelihood of it being extensive is more than likely to be minimal. The need for any space to be fully utilised is vitally important especially when there might be an extensive number of items which would need to be placed on this space saving item. One particular item which meets these requirements is a bookcase and is known to impress time after time.

Just like any other item of space saving furniture, there are many ways in which your own bookcase can be built and comes in a number of designs. Bookshelves are available without a backboard, can come in a variety of widths and can be supplied in a number of colours which do not have be the light brown colour which traditional bookcases normally are.

Effective shelving is very important as well for any bookcase. Depending on what items are to be placed on the bookshelf, a variety of depths and widths can be supplied so that this then matches the actual items which are due to be placed on the bookshelf. The grooves which hold the bookshelf in place can vary as well but for any bookshelf to have as longer a life span as possible then checking that these grooves are strong is vitally important as they are able to hold the shelves in place with no possibility at all of them losing grip and falling down. Just like choosing the right bookcase, having the most effective shelving should go hand-in-hand with their bookcase.

Even if you believe your current bookcase meets your requirements, then a rethink might be needed as the wide range of bookcases currently available along with excellent shelving provides too tempting for many customers and businesses to ignore as they will enhance any living or business space.

Environmentally-Friendly Flyer and Business Card Design

August 22, 2011 by Nick Bella

Most businesses now have an environmental or sustainability policy that states that they will do everything they can to reduce their carbon footprint. This usually includes using only recyclable materials, producing less waste and minimising the paper trail where possible. This is also a consideration when selecting the paper used in your business card printing, as there are generally a number of options available to you including a recycled paper option. The recycled paper is only slightly thinner than the usual paper or card used for standard business card printing, but will contribute towards your sustainability policy and saving the environment. The same options should be available for other kinds of paper-based promotional materials such as flyers and leaflets.

When designing your flyers, you can tie them into so that they match your business card design. Cards Made Easy have a number of different paper options available, including recycled paper for flyers and leaflets over 300gsm in thickness. Other paper types include matt and gloss (both laminated and not laminated) and silk. As well as having the recycled option, using a flyer made of a paper of this thickness will give it a more professional look and feel, meaning that it is more likely to be looked at by potential clients rather than thrown away. Flyers are also available in different sizes, from A6 through to A4, and can either be folded or one single or double sided page. All of Cards Made Easy’s printing services are as environmentally-friendly as possible, as they use digital printing to create less waste and avoid the use of harmful chemicals. They also won the Carbon Smart award in 2010 for reducing their carbon footprint through these measures and consequently helping their customers to do the same through the materials that they purchase from them.

CD31 antibody may help to develop novel cardiovascular therapies

August 22, 2011 by Nick Bella

CD31, also known as PECAM1 (platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1), encodes a type I integral membrane protein and member of the immunoglobulin receptor superfamily. The CD31 antibody is widely used as an endothelial marker.

CD31 is expressed on a number of cell types, including macrophages, lymphocytes and endothelial cells, and is specifically concentrated at endothelial junctions. CD31 antibody studies have shown PECAM1 is also expressed in a number of soft tissue, vascular and endothelial tumours; the CD31 antibody database is a useful source of endothelial markers when studying angiogenesis in connection with tumour recurrence.

CD31 is expressed on the membranes of some endothelial blood-vessel cells. Recently, cardiologist Young-sup Yoon, of Emory University, published a CD31 antibody study suggesting CD31 may be significant in developing new cardiovascular therapies.

In Yoon’s study, the CD31 antibody was used in both donated human blood and mouse bone marrow cells to detect and isolate CD31(+) endothelial cells. Using an in vivo mouse model of PVD (peripheral vascular disease), it was seen that CD31(+) cells secreted hormones which supported the growth of new vasculature, enabling continued circulation through the legs. In vitro, CD31(+) cells were shown to mimic the growth of new blood vessels by developing tubular structures.

It was suggested that harvesting CD31-positive cells had several advantages over stem cells. They can be grown quickly, and do not require large volumes of patient blood or bone marrow. It is hoped the research may pave the way for novel cardiovascular disease treatments in the future.

We at Novus Biologicals have an extensive antibody database to support vascular research, to which we recently added a new CD31 antibody.

Ensuring businesses stay on the right side of employment law

August 22, 2011 by Nick Bella

Many businesses across all sectors and sizes might balk at the suggestion that they are not operating in accordance with Government legislation. Both the business owners and the staff that they employ might be the most upstanding and law abiding citizens imaginable. With the best wills and intentions in the world, thousands upon thousands continue to find themselves in employment tribunal situations every year due to their lack of knowledge and understanding when it comes to employment law.

Employment legislation is a continuously evolving and complex thing, just like the people related issues within any workplace. It does not differentiate between SME companies who are doing their best to build their businesses professionally or large corporate organisations with sophisticated human resources departments and systems at their disposals. Should lightning strike and a current or past employee have grounds to instigate a claim against a business, limitless payouts are at stake. Business owners are often at losses about preventative measures they could and should have taken to avoid legal action.

Amidst a growing compensation culture, many businesses wisely opt to outsource their human resources functions on a partial or fully managed basis to the experts. They view this as a cost effective insurance policy. Small to medium sized businesses who have no official internal human resources representation often lack the know-how, resources and time to effectively carry our risk assessments on the employee side of their operations. These companies are often in danger of being the hardest hit when adverse situations arise and they cannot prove that clear guidelines and policies were in place to address grievances that subsequently occur.

At NorthgateArinso Employer Services, we offer expert countrywide human resources services, including health & safety advice. Our aim is to ensure that our clients’ operations are in line with current and new employment laws and that they remain there with the appliance of common sense measures.
