Bird Watching for Beginners

December 31, 2010 by Mary Smith

Bird watching can be a fun, interesting hobby, and if you enjoy it you may find you keep it up for the rest of your life. You can also make a lot of friends by finding other people who enjoy this hobby. Here are some tips for bird watching for beginners.
First, learn something about bird watching. Get some books on the topic. You can find books about birds and bird watching at your local library, a book store like Waterstones, or buy some books online on Amazon. You can also subscribe to magazines about birds, or join a bird watching club.
Next, collect the equipment you will need. You don’t need a whole lot for bird watching, but it’s always a good idea to have a good pair of bird watching binoculars. Binoculars make it easier to see and identify birds that may be too far away to see well.
You may also want a camera with a telephoto lens. Some bird watchers also like to get hiking gear or camping gear so that they can combine their love of the outdoors with their love of birds. Some people also like to carry around a notebook or sketchbook so they can make notes about and draw pictures of the birds they see. But above all you need the binoculars.
Plan an outing. You can go somewhere as close as your back garden or as far away as the Scottish Highlands or the southern coast to watch birds. It really doesn’t matter. You don’t even have to go to a place that is renowned for being a good place to watch birds. Birds tend to like wooded areas, grassy areas, and places where they can easily find food like worms, seeds, or shell fish.
Have fun researching and enjoying your new hobby.

Shelves of superstore stripped of goodsThe shelves of a superstore in Hayes Town have been stripped of its goods and the store has been closed down until further notice. Food and other items were pulled from the Wilkinsons store in Pump Lane last week as the shelves and other storage facilities in the store were reported to be unfit. The shelving and other storage racks will now be looked at by the company owners, while the store closes for ‘building improvements.’ This comes after a routine inspection of the store last week when food and other items were pulled from the shelves after local media reported, the building was in a ‘substandard condition.’ According to a report in The Uxbridge Gazette, the store chose to close its doors voluntarily and the food was pulled ‘as a precaution’ while the work is due to take just over a week to complete. When the store management was contacted by the paper, they confirmed that environmental health officers had visited the store last week but they would not be able to divulge any more details to the press as part of the ongoing investigation. Speaking to the paper, a spokesperson said: “Wilkinson has temporarily closed its Hayes store while it carries out building improvements. “We found that there were a number of issues relating to the storage of goods and materials that we wanted to put right- our Hayes store will soon be able to offer an improved shopping environment.” This store is one of the busiest Wilkinson stores in the country and sells a number of items including electronic goods, food and toiletries. It also offers a catalogue service where customers can order furniture online or in the store. While the store is shut for this essential work to be carried out, the nearest available stores are in West Ealing and Uxbridge
