Exquisite, Efficient and Eco-Friendly Kitchen Design

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

The eco-enthusiast can make a real difference with just a few simple considerations integrated into their new kitchen design.

Water
Reducing the amount of water used in the kitchen is actually pretty easy. Install a water meter (rather than paying set water rates) and become instantly more mindful of consumption. Low-flow dishwashers, clothes washers and faucets are also fast becoming the norm.

Faucets in particular are of considerable interest to the avid eco-fan. Self-closing faucets are mounted on a spring that can be set to shut off water flow after a few seconds. Alternatively, infrared sensors that turn water on and off upon detection of an object can be effective in eliminating water waste.

Kitchen Worktops and Units
Reclaimed materials such as recycled cupboard doors and kitchen worktops are obviously greener than buying new, however sometimes the right thing just doesn’t come along. New wooden worktops tend to be greener than stone or stainless steel thanks to the lower amount of production energy required.

Look for a company that practices sustainable product material sourcing. For example, when shopping around for wooden worktops, opt for a company that sources all its wood from recognised replanting programmes.

Appliances
Aside from implementing tried and tested tips for saving energy (don’t leave the fridge door running, turn the washing machine down to 30° etc) it’s worth going the extra mile and investing in appliances noted for their energy efficiency. Pay particular attention to the sneaky energy consumption of older fridge models, which can gobble around 13.5% of the annual home energy bill!

It terms of waste management awareness, companies recycling as close to 100% business waste as possible are preferable. This can include everything from wood chips and glass to IT equipments and paper. Self-enclosed extraction systems enable eco-aware companies to enclose emissions and consequently recycle more efficiently.

Should You Buy Your Child A BMX?

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

If your child is begging you for a BMX, you may well be put off by the idea of them trying out all kinds of stunts and in the process causing themself a serious injury. You may also be less than convinced that it is a practical buy, not offering the same potential for transport that a mountain bike, say, might offer.

So if your child really wants a BMX, should you buy them one?

BMX bikes may seem to be more limited in function than a mountain bike for instance, but in reality, they can actually perform many more functions. In this way, the chances are that your child will be heading out on them more often and therefore getting lots of valuable exercise in the process. Whilst other bikes are usually simply a way of getting from A to B, these bikes are a lot more than that and can be not only a form of transport, but also offer many more options to the aspiring sporty child. They also bring much more potential for social interaction for your child than other bikes will bring.

Not only that, but the safety aspect shouldn’t worry you too much either. Simply ensure that they have the right pads and that they are fully aware of the right places to go and use their bikes, whether that is a skate park to try out tricks or the right areas to test out there racing skills. Using any bike can potentially have dangers associated with them, but actually getting children to wear the right protective gear when riding BMX bikes will be a lot easier than trying to get them to wear pads on any other kind of bike.

So don’t be put off, the right bike will give them a whole lot of pleasure and help them get fit at the same time. So what’s not to like?

Luxury Hotels On The Island Of Jersey In The English Channel

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

It’s only 22 kilometers (14 miles) from France, but 161 kilometers (100 miles) from the English coast. It’s large enough to have several small towns spaced out over its 118 square kilometers (46 square miles), but small enough for everything to be close by.

Jersey has cool summers and mild winters, with an average annual temperature of about 12°C (53°F), and lows very rarely reaching the freezing point. The island has a multitude of historical sites, sandy beaches, and scenic views of both the sea and the countryside.

And there are many luxury hotels.

The Kitchen Worktops Conundrum

February 17, 2011 by James Lewis

Creating the perfect kitchen is sometimes a real labour of love –design decisions and budgetary considerations swirl unmetered through the mind of the avid kitchen planner! A Belfast sink? Slow-close elongated high-gloss draws? A kitchen island to maximise space? The considerations are undoubtedly numerous.

The key is creating a kitchen that suits an individual’s lifestyle. For example, raising a young family in a black high-gloss kitchen can leave even the most accomplished parents rabid at the near constant polishing-away of tiny fingerprints and repeated dents and scratches tarnishing the surfaces of their expensive bespoke units!

Kitchen worktops make up the sturdy bones of a high-functioning, heavily utilised kitchen. The choice mainly lies between granite, wood and stainless steel.

Granite
Incredibly chic and stylish, but often expensive, granite is highly resistant to heat damage, staining, and spills (although black coffee and red wine could leave stains) The weight of granite can make it a tricky worktop material to integrate due to the necessity of a certain standards of support underneath. Widely available in matte or gloss finish, although for most buyers contemporary gloss is preferable.

Wood
Wooden worktops are very versatile when it comes to style, finish, maintenance and material (take a look at the difference between black American walnut and oak wooden worktops) It’s usually fairly easy to remove marks and staining via gentle sanding or regular cleaning. Perhaps a notable downside is the need to keep wooden worktops as dry as possible, as prolonged contact with water can turn wood black. On average, wood is probably the best all-round investment in terms of style, durability and budget.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is incredibly hygienic, tough, heat resistant and cheap. The recent trend for minimalist kitchens has led to a healthy resurgence in stainless steel worktops. However, it’s worth noting that stainless steel surfaces scratch incredibly easily and can be difficult to repair.
