The development of the inkjet printer

The first inkjet printers ht the market in the 1980’s however their prices didn’t become affordable enough until the 1990s for the humble home user.  However there are claims on the actual technology surrounding inkjets and their printer cartridges dating back to the seventies when Canon claim to have developed what it coined as ‘bubble jet’ technology. The story goes that an engineer inadvertently discovered this by touching a syringe filled with ink with a soldering iron. The force of the heat caused the ink to shoot out of the needle and this new printing method was born.

There have been some great developments in the technology for inkjet printing.  You can now buy inkjet printers that produce print outs that have a photographic quality second only to those produced in a photographic lab. Ink itself has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and huge developments have been made by companies such as Canon, Epson, and HP who have brought out regular advances in printer ink technology.

There are two main advantages to using inkjet rather than laser printers. The first is that colour documents are superior and secondly they are cheaper in the main.  This has made them attractive to home users and in the 1990s, due to the affordability and photographic quality of print outs they became very popular.

However running costs of inkjet printers can be higher than laser jet printers. Ink cartridges will print fewer pages and need to be changed more frequently. However the advances in technology, performance, quality and usability ensure they remain the first choice for home users.
