Slot machine myths

July 20, 2010 by Mary Smith

Slot machines are pretty well known in casinos all around the world. And while each country has its own distinct variety of slot machines, the basis behind all of them remains the same. Conventionally slot machines are machines operated through coins and have three or more reels that spin when a lever is pulled.

But there are variations, with the latest ones even allowing players to insert paper tickets with barcodes instead of coins. In the future, some slot machines may even boast touch screens that activates the wheels by simply touching it.

But many people are under the impression that slot machines are programmed not to pay out. On the contrary, in fact. The odds of a person hitting the jackpot on a slot machine are determined on a random number generator. This generator is built into the software of the slot machines so your odds will never ever change.

The placement of the slot machines is considered when setting up the machines. The higher paying machines will usually be placed where there is not much traffic, while slot machines that share similar payout percentages are placed side by side.

Another common myth is that a payout is affected by the temperature of the coins inserted into the machine. This is ridiculous as slot machines cannot sense the temperature of the coins; thereby payouts are not determined by the temperature of the coin.

Some people also believe that the use of a slot club card affects the payout of a slot machine. The truth is that the card does not affect the machine’s payout percentage at all. The card is used for various purposes – to monitor the player on the basis of his gambling and the other amenities that card holders are entitled to.

Another myth is that a slot machine is ‘due to hit’ if it has not paid out for a long period of time. This is false as once again, the selection is completely random.
