Texas Hold’em tactics – do you ever make these 3 common mistakes?

June 28, 2010 by Mary Smith

Someone once said that it is only human to err. While that is true it is also something that Texas Hold’em players, and especially ones only starting out, should avoid doing.

Here’s something to chew on:

Every time you play a hand differently than the way you would play it if you could see all of your opponent’s cards, they gain. Every time you play your hand the same way you would if you could see your opponent’s hand you gain. The same principle applies to your opponents.

These words are from Davis Sklansky, who is the author of The Theory of Poker. This means that your opponents profit when you play foolishly. But it also means that you profit when your opponents play foolishly. So mistakes are always good for someone out there.

But they’re something you should avoid at all costs. There are 3 extremely common mistakes that nearly all new Texas Hold’em players make. Here’s how to avoid them.

The first common mistake many make is to play too many hands. This is something that even some of the more experienced players do. These players call hands that they should’ve folded instead. Avoid this common mistake by choosing better starting hands. This is one of the most important Texas Hold’em skills.

The second common mistake many players make is to disregard their bankroll. This may be because they don’t understand how to manage their bankroll nor do they understand why it is important to manage their money properly. The best way to avoid this is to start with low limits until you progress beyond novice status.

The third common mistake some players make is to ignore pot odds. Some players ignore pot odds because they do not realise or do not want to realise how important this concept is. They may even think that pot odds do not apply to cheap games. Weak players who use pot odds can easily beat a more experienced player who scoffs at them. Avoid making this mistake by brushing up on your pot odds. This should help you to determine which hands to call or fold.
