Casinos are doing better – is online poker following the same path?

January 29, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

Casinos are making a comeback. While many are still laying low after taking a couple of knocks during the recession, some are posting decent results and others are taking the first steps into the gambling industry.

Steve Schwartz is a gaming analyst who believes that Nevada casinos are going to do better this year. Profits are up by nearly $40 million for the same period in 2008. However, he believes it’ll be another year before it’s back to casino’s halcyon days. Casinos in St Louis are also hotting up: their year-on-year revenues have increased by 1%.

Mozambique is making it easier to open a casino and will also be allowing online gambling. Lithuania and Singapore are to places to watch: Lithuania is relaxing its gambling laws and Singapore will open its first casino resort in January 2010. And casinos in Macau are reporting increases of 48%.

The financial crisis has hit online poker rooms because fewer people are playing. Playing poker online needs disposable income. And when you’re in danger of losing your job, you might reduce the amount of money spent on entertainment.

But now that the financial crisis is easing, we’d like to know whether things are looking up for online gamblers. Land-based casinos are still around so when will the tide turn for online casinos?
