Choosing the best pet ID tag for your cat’s collar

January 29, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

It is every cat owner’s responsibility to have their pet fitted with an ID (identification) tag, whether it’s an indoor or outdoor cat. Pet tags are available in a host of shapes, sizes, colours, styles and materials, making it possible for you to choose a pet ID tag that best suits your cat. So before heading out and purchasing a pet tag for your cat, consider these tips:

What features should a pet ID tag have?

  • Your pet tag should be durable – In order to remain readable your tags should be durable. Choose a hard, water resistant material like metal or plastic.
  • Small and light – Cats are known for their dislike towards wearing things around their neck. Keep ID tags as small and light as possible while still providing enough space for information.
  • Easy to clean – If your pet’s ID tag is dirty, it is probably unreadable as well. Choose a tag that is easy to clean and made from a slick material like metal or plastic.
  • Safe – ID tags offer your cat the safety of identification as a wanted family pet, not a stray.
  • Permanent – Choose a reliable and strong material that will not wear over time. Be sure to replace your ID tags whenever it is lost or when information becomes out-dated.
  • The best ID tags should be permanently engraved with your cat’s name and your telephone or cell number and be plastic or metal. These types of ID tags are easy to clean, durable and readily available at your veterinarian’s office, in pet stores, and even online.

Shopping tips

  • If you haven’t chosen a name yet, then choose a tag that says ‘help me’ and your contact number. Consider adding a ‘reward’ to the tag, which should offer the finder extra encouragement to return your pet.
  • Some companies custom make your pet tags with imprinted or embroidered name tags and contact details.
  • Make sure that you keep the information accurate and up-to-date. If you move or change your contact details, purchase new pet tags as soon as possible. Pets may easily get lost when owners move, as they are not familiar with the area and are more likely to roam.
  • Lastly, consider using a pet tag identification tag system. This offers registration and a toll free number which can be called if your pet is lost.
