Pet medical costs can add up quickly without proper insurance

May 25, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

Your new pet has settled into your family’s routine and your little ones are extremely fond of their new playmate. Life carries on as usual: playdates, parent-child meetings with their teachers, and long lunches with your friends when you have the time.

But somehow you just don’t think about insurance for your children’s new little friend. You don’t because it just doesn’t occur to you and because your busy schedule doesn’t allow much reflection on such things. Or perhaps you think that pet accidents do not need to be insured against because it won’t cost too much to send the animal to a veterinarian.

But what would happen if your children’s cuddly new friend were to fall down 6 flights of stairs or suffers from a disease that is expensive to treat? Most people do not have enough savings to cover an eventuality such as this. This is unfortunate because while the accidents can’t be prevented, the fallout from being unable to afford quality care can easily be prevented with pet insurance cover from a company such as Bow Wow Insurance.

The uncomfortable news is that a recent study from the Veterinary Pet Insurance Company found that repeated pet illnesses that end up not being life-threatening can become a big drain on the pocket. Dogs’ most frequent ailment in 2009 was ear infections; cats mostly had to go to the vet for lower urinary tract disease.

This means that no matter what we as pet custodians do, our animals may get sick even though they receive only the best care, love and attention from us. And when they do get sick, we often have to go into debt to pay the bill. Some people prefer to put the animal down instead of sending them to a vet.

This is sad because pet insurance is not nearly as expensive as one would assume it is. Contrast the monthly insurance premium with all the benefits one’s animal gets and it stands to reason that it is well worth the money.

We all want to spend our money on the things that matter most to us. Consider spending a small amount of money on the animal your family has come to love the most.
