How outdoor lighting could transform your garden

May 16, 2011 by Mary Smith

For those of us who have spent most of their adult lives in the city, the concept of having any outdoor space is a novelty. Many people make the move to the countryside or the suburbs when they have children because they want their children to be able to run around and play in the outdoors without worrying about them too much. For these adults, inexperienced in outdoor living, making the most of the space afforded to them by having a garden is a challenge.

If you are one of these adults then congratulations! Your garden is effectively another living room, if you are clever enough to use it in that way, and don’t allow the thoughts of English weather to dampen your enthusiasm. When looking at your garden in order to maximise on the potential it offers, you might start by thinking about eating outside. You might not be able to do so all year round, but you can probably do so for longer than you think.

Getting weatherproof furniture to sit and eat at is the first investment that you need to make. If you are a great lover of the outdoors, and want to eat outside in most weathers, then purchasing a free-standing gas heater could be the best thing you ever did. It won’t keep you dry, but on perfect crisp cold sunny days, it is exactly what you need to allow you to stay outside.

Lighting is the second consideration. When it comes to outdoor lights you need to think about both practicality (being able to see what you are doing) as well as ambience (creating an atmosphere).
You can use lighting all around your garden: on and around your deck or patio, inside fish ponds, up in trees – there really is no limit to how creative you can be with the potential offered by outdoor lights.
The truth is you might find yourself enjoying the garden so much that the children might feel you bought the house for you, not them!
