How to buy a combi boiler

April 24, 2010 by Mary Smith Leave a Comment

There are many things to consider when buying a new boiler so it may be a good idea to talk to a qualified person. The average boiler lasts for about 15 years. The best type of boiler should improve your heating controls, cut the amount of carbon dioxide and save you money. You could save up to £250 a year by installing an energy efficient boiler.
It would be even better if you could speak to the person who will install the appliance.
Combination versus heat-only

The two main types of boilers are combination and heat-only. Choose the boiler that suits your needs better. Your installation company or person can explain which is better for your house.
Who will install it?

Only qualified people may install combi boilers. Plumbers from Corgi (Council for Registered Gas Installers) are qualified to do such installations.http://www.baxi.co.uk/produ

You want to be sure that the installer has been in business for more than a few years. Ask for references from previous customers before the installer does any work.
Heating output

There is a heating range that boilers fall into – it is generally between 12 and 40kW. Different households need different kW: small houses need a lower kW and bigger houses need a higher kW.
Size

The installer would be able to tell you how big a boiler you need for your house. There are a few criteria that they will consider:

* How many other radiators the house has
* The house’s insulation
* Are there high ceilings in the house
* How demanding will the household be on the hot water system
* The age of the house
* Does the house have double glazing
* The number of bathrooms in the house

Discuss your current and future needs

The installer would make better suggestions if you tell them as much as possible about your future plans.

* The extent and nature of improvements you have made to the energy efficiency of your house.
* Does your system need central heating controls to be more efficient?
* Will you want to add more rooms now or in the future?
* Your requirements may change in the future. What are your current system requirements? Do you need an extra radiator in any of the rooms?

Other things to consider

Some boilers give off a liquid that is acidic so they should be close to a drain. The condensing liquid should be drained. Expect much water vapour while the condensing boiler is working.

Not all boilers want to be hidden away in a kitchen cupboard. Many boilers can go onto a wall but discuss where to place the boiler with the installer.

Give your boiler a yearly service so that it will run smoothly.
