How Likely is Arson?

February 16, 2011 by James Lewis

Arson may seem like an uncommon occurrence, but is actually the largest cause of fires in Britain, causing billions of pounds worth of damage and killing or injuring hundreds of people a year. In fact, there are often thousands of instances of arson every single week in Britain, a figure which may be startling to many.

The chances of arson in your area will differ depending on the region you live in, but the methods will often be the same.

One of the most common ways to deliberately start fires is by posting incendiary devices or flammable liquids through a letterbox. This is not only one of the most common, but also one of the most effective and also the most distressing for those involved. Therefore, should the threat of arson be something that worries you, one of the best ways to get peace of mind is by safeguarding that letterbox.

Part of the Secured by Design New Homes Guide 2010, the mail delivery is addressed with a few recommendations. Firstly to block off or lock your existing letterflap in your door – the product Flaplock provides that solution, secondly to have a wall mounted or freestanding mailbox such as Eurobox, to accept your mail, ensuring no access can be granted via the front door. They highlight theft via ‘fishing’ through the letterflap, arson from flammable items being posted through the letterflap and ‘bumping’ a technique to open the lock from the inside of the door by means of the letterflap as common problems, all removed with the new approach. In many new builds letterflaps in doors are a thing of the past replaced by secure metal mailboxes externally, providing security and peace of mind.

Whether you have a high-risk business or live in an area where considering safety is very important, there can be many reasons to install such measures as being safe is going to be far better than being sorry, and the cost for such a precaution will be minimal.

Keeping our businesses and loved ones safe is extremely important for everyone, and whatever your own needs there will be a product to suit, from simple solutions right through to much more complicated installations.
