The eco-enthusiast can make a real difference with just a few simple considerations integrated into their new kitchen design.

Water
Reducing the amount of water used in the kitchen is actually pretty easy. Install a water meter (rather than paying set water rates) and become instantly more mindful of consumption. Low-flow dishwashers, clothes washers and faucets are also fast becoming the norm.

Faucets in particular are of considerable interest to the avid eco-fan. Self-closing faucets are mounted on a spring that can be set to shut off water flow after a few seconds. Alternatively, infrared sensors that turn water on and off upon detection of an object can be effective in eliminating water waste.

Kitchen Worktops and Units
Reclaimed materials such as recycled cupboard doors and kitchen worktops are obviously greener than buying new, however sometimes the right thing just doesn’t come along. New wooden worktops tend to be greener than stone or stainless steel thanks to the lower amount of production energy required.

Look for a company that practices sustainable product material sourcing. For example, when shopping around for wooden worktops, opt for a company that sources all its wood from recognised replanting programmes.

Appliances
Aside from implementing tried and tested tips for saving energy (don’t leave the fridge door running, turn the washing machine down to 30° etc) it’s worth going the extra mile and investing in appliances noted for their energy efficiency. Pay particular attention to the sneaky energy consumption of older fridge models, which can gobble around 13.5% of the annual home energy bill!

It terms of waste management awareness, companies recycling as close to 100% business waste as possible are preferable. This can include everything from wood chips and glass to IT equipments and paper. Self-enclosed extraction systems enable eco-aware companies to enclose emissions and consequently recycle more efficiently.
