Are You In Line With The Disability Discrimination Act?

February 1, 2011 by Mary Smith

It is important for all businesses to be aware of the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), both in terms of employment opportunity and potential customers. One of the major considerations that needs to be considered since the introduction of the law is accessibility of the business premises. Whether you are a shop or simply an office block, if considerations can be made to aid those with disabilities or issues with mobility, then they need to be.

Some see this as a major hassle or an issue they would rather not take the time to overcome as they see no immediate benefit. However, the benefits are not just for those who are disabled but also for those running the business too.

Disabilities do not preclude someone from being extremely proficient and talented. Therefore in an office situation, you don’t want to have to turn away the best candidate simply because you have not made the right provisions. Legal implications aside, this will be harmful to your business, as will the reputation that you will garner should you turn someone away for such a reason.

In retail, not having sufficient access for those with disabilities or reduced mobility will often mean that people will take their trade elsewhere and the cost of installing a platform lift or wheelchair lift will very often be covered by the extra trade you pick up in a surprisingly short time.

So when it comes to getting a wheelchair lift, don’t see it as something that you have to do, see it as an asset to your business and one that could potentially yield many great results for you. A platform lift helps to ensure that no one is excluded because of their disability and the benefits are ones that are felt on every side.
