Things to Remember when Moving to Germany

January 14, 2011 by Mary Smith

If you’re thinking about moving to Germany, it’s important to be prepared. You can’t just dive right in and hope for the best because chances are you’ll have forgotten something vital, so make sure to plan wisely and you’ll be able to start your new life in the best possible way. But just what things do you need to remember when moving abroad? Here are just a few of them to help you out.

•    Learn the language. Hopefully you’ll already have a basic understanding of the language before you even consider moving to Germany, but if not now’s the time to learn. Of course, most countries in the EU speak English but it’s still wise to learn to show that you’re willing to be part of the culture, and people will be much more appreciative if you at least attempt to speak their language every now and again.
•    Get your accommodation sorted. You’ll of course need to have your new home sorted out before you move, but don’t forget about finalising the sale of your own house. It’ll be much more difficult to arrange things when you’re abroad, and unless you’re renting it out make sure it’s sorted before you leave
•    Arrange the necessary visas. It’s important to be sure that you’re in the country legally, so make sure to speak to the relevant authorities who will be able to advise. You’ll need to arrange things like bank accounts and health insurance as well, so don’t leave it to the last minute.
•    Ensure you’ve got movers to help. There’s no way you can consider moving to Holland, Germany (or anywhere else) without having a removal firm to accommodate. You’ll want to make sure that your possessions get to your new home safely and efficiently, so make sure to choose movers you can trust.

These are just a few things you need to remember when moving to the EU whether you’re moving to Holland, Germany, France or anywhere else, and if you bear them in mind you’ll have a much better chance of everything going smoothly.
