Bean bags may feature in classroom

January 13, 2011 by Mary Smith

Bean bags have long been a feature of many homes in the UK and other countries around the world. They are liked for their aesthetic charm, convenience and comfort.

However, they are not usually visible in classrooms. Generally speaking, more traditional seating pervades in such spaces.

But a school may be about to set a new trend by adding bean bags to one of its rooms, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.

According to the publication, St Lawrence Academy in the Lincolnshire town has given your entrepreneurs the chance to help design a classroom as part of its rebuilding project and the humble bean bag featured in their suggestions.

In total, 120 pupils at the educational institution completed a day of activities and a design for the space was at the centre of their efforts. And it is not only the bean bag that may feature if the plans go ahead. There were also suggestions for new school equipment to be added.

Commenting on the initiative, Stella Onyett from Young Enterprise Yorkshire And Humber said: “[It] gave children the chance to meet those other than teachers who help keep the school running. There are five house groups within the school – Gold, Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst and Turquoise. Within each one were four groups of six pupils trying to design a classroom which would hopefully become a reality.

“They will present their ideas to class peers detailing how much they will spend. Teachers will then choose one group from each house to present to a panel of business volunteers for an overall winner to be decided.”

Demi Cooper, who is 12 years old and one of the participants in the project, revealed she enjoyed giving her presentation and noted that her group had called themselves the Stars of the Future. The youngster added she hopes her team wins.
